Mulholland videos and the riders' riding styles
Motorcycles on Mulholland 3/06/11 - YouTube
So I'm farting around for the most part at work today and I stumbled upon these vids of this popular road in cali.
Mostly sportbike riders in the videos, a couple moto bikes and the rare hypermotard is spotted in a couple vids. And there are tons videos for this road plus plenty of crash vids.
I just wanted to chat about rider technique. I started riding on my hypermotard, no dirtbiking and no prior experience other then a basic rider course. I see these sportbike guys and it seems like most of them have a good idea of what they are doing. Though I see some guys leaning their knees down while keeping their heads up which seems odd, I guess to look cool. I thought it was weird to see some guys on their supermotos to be sitting straight up and putting their foot down to assist in taking a turn, is this normal on the street?
Just wanted to get some feedback from guys who ride Hypers about the riders in this video. Whether it's praise, criticism or just making fun of the people in this video I wanna hear it!
The third guy in this vid is riding a sweet sounding hyper and he puts his foot down...

it certainly looks like a popular road and riders seem to be riding at a much slower speed than they normally would.
what i've noticed is all the squids without gear. but i guess most of them had long sleeve shirts and pants on... so many southern cali squids with board shorts and flip flops on their rockets. oy.

That road is actually pretty tight, I was surprised as I thought it was a faster road based on stories and history. It goes to the Famous Rock Store so for some, it's merely a route to a destination, not that that is any kind of excuse NOT to wear all the safety gear.

Putting your foot down on asphalt is more than stupid. If your rubber soled boot even did FLAT hit the ground at 35 or 40 mph....it would jam your leg back so hard it would put you in the ditch. Looks cool i guess but it's a sure sign of being the king squid of the day.
What i noticed most in both vids is not riding style so much...but the poor lines those guys were running. They couldn't possibly progress their riding skills any further useing those lines.
There were about 5 guys total that actually knew how to ride a bike. The rest were just wasting their time.

And that's why you should put your foot/leg pretty high up, and also avoid having it locked. I only do this on tight hairpins, on fast bends I just hang off superbike style.
And to be honest, in both of the video's most of the riders have a pretty poor technique.

On slow tight turns I tend to lean the bike over while staying upright and pointing that inside foot. It has to go somewhere!

Here is a youtube of a nice save on a supermoto bike
If I remember my physics correctly the reason for hanging off is to create a combined Center of Gravity that is lower than you could get with just lean angle. If that is true then sitting upright and throwing the knee out probably isnt the best technique.
But I learned that back in the late 70's when the typical UJM didn't have much clearance so I could be outdated!

Yeah but I hate running over my own foot!
Ribalta is a good rider. Gotta love his job!

The 3 or so guys in the middle of the video with track fairing were probably the best out of the bunch, but this video show how people think they can do what these bike should be capable of doing. Bad lines, bad body positioning, really bad gearing. Reminds me of my first year riding on the track at barber. Turn five is tricky enough but it makes you learn all of these thing with out remorse.
