Advice on purchase of new 2010 796
I've never purchased a new motorcycle, or a street bike for that matter... only used 6xx dual sports.
My local dealer has a new 2010 HyperMotard 796. List is $9995, they want to discount $1000 but then there's another $995 in misc fees.
Is that a fair deal? Do people haggle on bikes like they do with autos? They seem eager to move it, so maybe they'll throw in some extras--what should I ask for?
Thanks in advance.

Ask for the 1078cc engine
What do the misc fees consist of, because to me, that sounds like a lot of money for "nothing". I would try to see if you could get some aftermarket parts thrown in there. I'd ask for better front fork springs and oil, that's the first mod I did to my bike and it was by far the best.

If the fees are normal for all sales (shipping, prep) then you save $1000.
See what other dealers charge
I can tell you from my experience Ducs are rarely discounted

The fees are shipping from Ducati to dealer (around $500) and preparation (around $400). Every dealer slaps these fees on top of the sticker price. Then you have to add sales tax (if your state collects any), and registration fees.
So when I bought my 2011 HM796, I ended it up paying out the door about 20% over sticker price. 10% discount is ok but not great. The 2012 models will be hitting the showrooms soon, so a 2010 should be discounted more, even though nothing has changed in the new models.

Thank you. It sounds like the deal is fair, but not excellent, and it would be unlikely for them to budge on the price or the $995 setup fee. My best bet is for them to throw in a few accessories to close the deal.
They said the stock springs are acceptable for me @ 210 lbs, however the front end did feel squishy on the showroom floor. I will definitely ask about stiffer front springs and heavier weight fork oil. I appreciate that suggestion.
IIRC the 600 mile service was ~ $225, so I can ask for that.
Any other key mods people make off the bat? I'm thinking if I go back with a $200-500 short list of things to ask for, that’d be cool. Are frame sliders dorky (disclaimer: I've never owned a street bike)?
Cheers.

I recently bought a 2011 796 and got it out the door for sticker price ($9995). That works out to something like a $1200 discount around here with taxes, lic, registration, etc.
No idea what part of the country you are in but that's the way it's working in SE Michigan right now.

I just picked up a 2010 1100evo new off the show room for $11250 out the door. They waved all set up fees and discounted off the msrp. Plus they threw in a shirt for the wife and some key chains ( in my opinion made the deal) they can wave the set up fees if they want to move it bad enought. good luck.

Stock springs acceptable for someone weighing 210? I weigh 180 and found the stock stuff way too soft. It's ok for commuting maybe, but not great by a long shot.
Other mods people do is changing the stock seat for a DP one, and putting on a steering damper. However, I don't know if a steering damper would be really necessary on the 796.

Deal sounds ok I guess but I have to agree with Drinky about the springs. They are completely full of shit if they're trying to tell you the stock suspension is good for a guy weighing 210. I'm about 200 and the front needs a ton of work and my rear is on full preload. At the very least I need a new rear spring. Suspect they just don't wanna deal with it, they just want ya to buy it.
