my thoughts on gearing on the 796

the bike stock is geared way to high as most of you know.
before any of my mods i did the 14t front sprocket and made the bike much better but after my exhaust/de cat/velocity stacks and custom power commander it was a beast and felt to me geared to low. mainly in the canyons i ride in , i hate shifting ten millions times. so i put back on the stock 15t front sprocket and with all my extra power it pulled it fine but still was a tad geared to high for my liking.so i put back on the 14t front. now as of today I'm trying a new set up, I'm running 15t front and 42t rear (stock is 15f/41r) and after reading all the gear ratio charts its almost in the middle of my other two options. i will find out tomorrow how it feels and based on the gear ratio charts it should sit in the middle of 14f/41r and 15f/41r or very close to it.
keep in mind this is my opinions on how i like it and also i have my stacks to pull more power then stock.

BTW it fit the stock chain and the 1100 rear sprockets bolt right up to the 796 cause thats what i used. a forum member hooked me up on a new rear sprocket off a 1100 for dirt cheap.

I also reverted back to the 15 front because that 14 was too small in diameter and the chain was just dragging the top of the swingarm too much.

For the rear i spent the money and went the AFAM quick change carrier and a 44 tooth sprocket. The 14x41 is the exact same ratio as the 15x44.

With the 15x44 i also thought the gearing to bit a bit low so last week i got a 43 tooth sprocket and put it on. One ride in the Mountains and i knew it was a mistake. I just got used to the blazing acceleration of the 15x44...so i put the 44 back on. For me with 74.2 hp on the dyno....it's now geared a hair low...but man does it rail the corners. I have an on ramp here by my house that my previous best mph was 97 mph in full lean. My Hyper ...with the low gearing...i hit 103 mph on that ramp at full lean. I could never get my Daytona 675 with 111.87 HP to handle that same ramp at that high a speed.

Now El Tardo has more HP than i do. So with his 78 hp...i would think the 15x43 would be perfect.

By the way...for those interested....i can change the rear sprocket and adjust the chain in 17 minutes flat. The AFAM quick change is bad ass.

Great info guys.
I'm having my dealer throw in the 14T at my 600-mile service.
Other than that, my 796 is pretty much stock. But i see that one can spend a fortune on mods.

I just got the regular 14T from Ducati for about $40 but you can get a cheaper JT Sprockets one.

I might end up doing it myself since i just bought a T-rex rear stand from craiglist. Any tips for adjusting the chain? I have never worked on bikes with a single-sided swingarm.

chain adjusting is cake on this bike. first loosen the two 14mm bolts behind the rear sprocket on the very back of the swing arm. then turn the black chain guard counterclockwise to loosen and when done clockwise to tighten to how you want it and then snug up the two 14mm bolts. easy cheesy lemon squeezy
