FNG checking in with a question about exhaust blueing
Greetings gents, been lurking for a while and just recently pulled the trigger on a 2011 RED Hyper 1100 Evo. The bike is as insane as promised, I can't pull myself off the damn thing. It's all stock right now, waiting for the off season before putting on some goodies.
Anyways, I do have a quick question for the group. I've had some rather considerable blueing occur on the header from the front cylinder. Now I know some blueing is to be expected, but the pipe already looks like shit (rust, brown pipes) and I'm not even at 500 miles. I ain't looking for a chrome exhaust, it just doesn't seem right. I know a lot of guys here have aftermarket full systems and perhaps those systems have higher quality SS or something like that, but it seems to me that the stock pipes shouldn't be this bad.
I also get a tremendous amount of angry popping when I let off the throttle even a touch. Now this ain't my first rodeo (re: duc), I've had carbed and FI monsters in the past and I know popping, strong engine braking, is part of the territory. But seems odd for my brand new bike to sound as rough as I've experienced on any of my older poorly running monsters. With all this in mind, does it seem like the techs who set up the bike left it a little extra lean? I attached the photo that shows the blueing pretty well--the photo was taken at just over 200 miles--its the only photo I have for now.
I don't feel like I should have to get a fatduc/PC5/ecu/etc on a stock bike, especially since I don't know what direction I want to go with my mods later on. Any input is much appreciated fellas, and looking forward to getting involved here.
-Jake
EDIT: Just to clarify, golden is good I understand that. At this point the connecting piece to the silencers are brown, as in rusty fence post brown.

That definitely looks a bit too lean to me, OR it could be from high rpm running at slow (airflow) speeds. How is the rear pipe?
What did the dealer say about it? They can and should test it with the CO meter to see the fuel mixture.

Taking it to the dealer next week for the 600 mile (changing the oil myself) to retorque everything and reset the service warning, I'll be sure they plug it into a sniffer. The high rpm thought makes sense, but I've been keeping it at or under 5k for the break in (ok maybe i've gone over a few times ). The rear pipe is "rusting fence post brown" with some ~2" round blotches of dark rustiness. Bike hasn't been in the wet.

mine looked like that at 1000 miles. Looks typical because they run pretty lean.

If you have the old 1100 model, get yourself a few cables and use ducatidiag to adjust the fuel trim. The bike stock is set WAY too lean. I've measured a lamda value of 1.2 on my DP ecu, so I'm guessing the stock ecu is even leaner.

It is posts that make me appreciate the dealer , where I bought mine they took the time to set it up proper before I took delivery...I had to wait it seems too long , but when I took delivery it ran very well...
I had the ecu and cans installed before I took delivery ... Was sort of expensive route to take , BUT they should all run as right as rain...
I would have talked to dealer at first signs of any "Issues"
You paid for PDI and they did not set it up Optimum...
GREAT BIKE have a ball...

I don't think stainless steel quality is the issue but rather surface finish. The stock stuff is thicker and the finish is a bit rough. No, definitely rough.
Second, lean isn't necessarily the only cause of discoloration. When an engine runs at best power mixture (there's a lot of discussion on that subject) the exhaust temps are still 1300 degrees F. Find out what that can do to stainless steel. (hint; melting)
Third, stock the thing runs at stoichiometric in closed-loop and that includes idle so that's 14.6:1 AFR on gas, 14.3:1 on E10, Lambda of 1 for both. It does dance around a lot (the reason for erratic idling and stumbling at light load) while in closed-loop.
The Harley guys are obsessed with that issue and their answer is to cover it with heavy chromed covers.
It's an internal combustion engine and it's so hot ya' can't even touch it!!
