Touring on the Hyper.

Who here tours on their Hyper? and if you do, what mods have you done (if any) to make touring easier? I'm torn between getting a hyper or an older multistrada. The hyper is probably the most fun bike i've ridden but I want to start doing some distance riding so i've begun looking at the multi also.

Thanks, Tyler

Touring and Hyper are not going very well together...

It can be done for sure, but that's clearly not what it was designed for.
First the range you can get out of a tank is so low, it get boring. I usually do 2 days trip from Montreal to Boston, and filling up the bike every 100 miles or so is a pita.

You can always buy the 3 Ducati Performance bags, and the DP tail bag, but you cant really fit much in there at all.
In fact touring with a Hyper pretty much comes down to how big of a backback you can handle.

Last time I went camping with the Hyper, I had to make my friend carry the tent on his Z1000. Now's he s riding a 1098, no more camping.

I have the 6 gal tank from CA Cycle Works and fuel range is no longer an issue. The DP seat seems to be breaking in after around 10k miles and I'm think about a Sargent a lot less.
I added the rack from Ducati which is of marginal use but better than nothing and I'm running a Wolfman tank bag which is excellent. I don't like any of the bags that Ducati sells. On the rear I also can add a Chase Harper Hide Away. If you haven't seen these they are nice soft tail bags that roll up into their own pouch. They also have a pair of bungees built in for attaching to your bike.
I'd love to see Givi or someone come out with a hard case pannier but may need to make up mounts on my own. We'll see how serious I get about it. I do have some soft luggage but it needs to be watched because of the proximity of the exhaust.

I think the basic bike is an excellent basis for a sport touring bike. I had a ST2 and loved it. I feel the "getting there" would be even more enjoyable on the HMS. Some will talk about no windshield and no big fairing but for the roads I like to use it'd be a non-issue and I've had no problems with any of the superslab riding I've done so far.

The short wheelbase might become a problem when loaded but heck, you won't know until you try it.

I did 1500 miles right out of the box with mine. DP luggage on the tank and a back pack. Got a DP comfort seat that helped a lot too. This was with the little stock tank. I got the CycleWorks tank now. If you want a lot more luggage, I'd get the Ventura luggage rack along with the DP stuff and you'll be good to go...with the 6.4 gal tank of course! Good luck, this bike can do it all!

Travel lite.......Have fun.

Earlier this year I did a 5 dayer on all the tight and twisty mountain roads we could find. I took my S4rs with a tank and tail bag. On the majority of the roads I was wishing I'd taken the Hyper. Fuel and luggage options are about the same, but the Monster seat is waaay better. But, that said, I allways take the Airhawk on the Hyper if I'm going further than a tankfull, and that fixes that problem.

I too find it an excellent bike for touring. I have the big tank, use DP front luggage, and a famsa tailroll, more than enough for me. I don't carry a tent though. Superb bike, does everything!

i do short and long ride every month. My 3 months old hyper is at 8000km now. Pretty alot for Singapore, a small country measured 55km from east to west. LOL

I did 2000km in a 4 days 3 nights ride in malaysia all the time. I agreed that if you are not the sorta panniers, top box and tank bag person, the fun of the ride depend entirely on the size of the back pack that you can carry.

However i also find out that carrying a big bag restrict your body movement alot. The long seat time on the same position caused sore monkey butt and you lose your focus on the road.

But......the small tank makes up for all these.....because i am forced to stop and rest every 150km. The cycle starts again.

Lol. I still enjoyed the ride. ^_^

thanks guys, you pretty much answered my questions. i'm coming off a slew of sport bikes, so the seating position of the hyper is a welcomed change. i'm not into loads of luggage, so i'd be perfectly happy with a tank bag and a back pack. the gas mileage doesn't bother me since all the previous ducati superbikes i've owned got about the same range, so that i'm used to. i've done 750 miles in one day on a 1098 so i figure i'd be able to do the same on a hyper, but with more comfort.

Well the wind blast will beat ya up over time on the highway but that just allows you to have even more fun exploring side roads and off the beaten path routes where the bike REALLY gets fun.

Dont get the ducati tank bag. Way too huge, cant see the meter and kept pressing onto the chest and stomach area.

Oh yes. How i can forget the super irritating mood destroying wind blast. Haiz.....yeah mate. that is a killer. When i was doint 180 kilometre per hour constantly. I almost wanted to give up and detour to home. My adrenaline got better when i dropped to 150kph instead.

My horns grew sharp and long when the convoy exited the highway, onto the country side.
