I have always liked my 796 with one obvious exception. The front end handling has a very indistinct feel. Unfortunately there is no way to adjust the stock forks. So I pulled them off and sent them to GP suspension with the idea of having custom 25mm cartridges built. It turns out that you cannot even fully disassemble the bottom of the stock forks and in the process a fork tube was broken. I did not want to just replace the stock forks so after lots of searching, Dave from GP recommended I check out an Italian manufacturer called Andreani. The site is in Italian but thanks to Google translator I learned that Andreani group sells other makers parts as well as designing their own custom parts. And it just so happens that they released a custom set of forks for the 796. The US importer is fastbikeindustries.com. I ordered mine through GP and the arrived yesterday. The forks are built / valved by your weight, riding style, etc which was part of a survey I filled out for GP.
Now to the goods. These things are in a totally different class that the stock forks. Fully adjustable preload, rebound and compression damping.
The bad news is the cost: $1699. I've only ridden a little bit on them so far but it is much better. The simple fact that you can actually adjust them is worth it to me.
So to anyone who is looking for a suspension upgrade to the 796, these are the ticket.
