Looking to buy my first hypermotard
So i am looking to buy my first hypermotard in a couple of weeks, and I am pretty set on getting one, but i have two concerns that i want other's opinion on.
1. I live in town and mostly drive in town, and this being an air-cooled bike, it makes me nervous to be in traffic... does it tend to overheat when driving in town. (i'm not in traffic alot, i have a 2.5 mile drive to work and it takes abiout 7 minutes there and 7 back home on the worst days) i just know my old 2003 cbr600rr would get to the point where the radiator fans would kick on on long days.
2. Maintaince scares me on this bike... how bad will my wallet hurt when i go to get the valves adjusted around 7500 miles. (someone told me about that with the desmodromic setup)
i think that is it... happy riding.

Hi,
I guess it is too late to talk you out of this.... one more man down....
I have the same lenght trip to work and live in a hot country, I have no isue with heat, on another note I rode a streetfighter on the same road and when the fans hit I think I boiled my testicules and burned my inner thighs....
so no real issue with the hyper...
Regarding the maintenance, I can't really help, it is not relevant what we pay here to what you pay over there... althought I just did the 7500 miles service but I still didn't get invoiced so.... keeping my fingers crossed.
welcome to Lala land!

I was stuck in stop and go traffic yesterday evening here in Atlanta and the temp was somewhere right around 100F, and the highest oil temp I saw was 238, well below anything dangerous.
As far as maintenance cost, I was quoted 520 for a valve service from the local dealership plus 180 for belt replacement, plus parts. In other words, they wanted about a grand for a 7500 service with new belts. I did it myself for about 250 in parts which included new belts, 3 new shims, and valve cover O-rings. The desmo system is not as much black magic as many would have you believe, it's an uncomplicated but unusual system which is no more difficult to work on than a more conventional system.

All of your concerns will be overcome the first time you go diving into a corner. By far one of the "funnest" bikes I have ridden. Plenty of practicality for everyday commuting comes standard. I dont know too many people that regret the purchase of a Hyper...unless it has affected their driving record!

7 min is not bad to be stuck in traffic for the hyper. It can get hot and the temp that you will read is higher than the water cooled bikes because it is an air cooled engine and has more tolerance in the engines specs. The newer hypers have a bigger radiator to keep things cooler. As for the Maintanances, you're buying a 2v engine not 4v engine. The 4v engines are very expensive. You can learn how to do it yourself is not that hard. I checked my valve clearence at 7500 miles and they were between spece. It is so easy to measured the clearence. The time consuming part is taking the gas tank off. There are plenty of videos in youtube about it. Best of luck and cheers!

it's like telling someone who is about to try heroin for the first time... what can you say... "don't do it?"... no, shit, of course you should go for it, it will feel great. But, then you'll be totally fucked.
