24,000 miles ... replaced sprockets and chain ...
so, i replaced the stock chain @ 12,000 miles, with a DID x-ring, and kept the stock front and rear sprockets, as they were still fine.
@ 24,000 miles, i inspected the chain and sprockets ... the sprockets were still in pretty good shape (i.e.: no rounded or broken teeth, no abnormal wear) ... but, the rear sprocket bushing was starting to wear, and induced a little "wiggle" in the sprocket (this is what i thought might have been the cush drives in earlier post).
so, replaced the front and rear sprockets and chain. sprockets are AFAM, front is 14 tooth, rear is 42 tooth with the quick change carrier. the chain is another DID.
first impressions with the 14 tooth front sprocket: the hypertard spins up faster, and the front end is a lot lighter when accelerating. seems like it only increased about 500 rpm @ 80mph, so should not be a big deal for top end (heck, i didn't buy the hypertard for its top end anyway ).
all-in-all, a cool upgrade/mod.

John, how come you didn't go with a 520 chain kit? (I know you guys are into performance stuff) I now have 8000mi on mine, with many track-days on it, & so far so good. Aloha Alex

ciao alex,
i was pondering doing the 520 conversion ... but i am not as light as you are, and needed the extra strength

Hrrrmmmm...
Is 12000 about what we should expect from the stock chain? Mine still looks ok to me and only has one track day on it. The teeth on the rear sprocket still have sharp edges like it did when new.

chain and sprocket life depends a lot on the maintenance provided (adjustments, cleaning, lubricating), as do riding styles, on their mileage ranges.
also, if you're a fat bast'rd like me, the chain and sprockets will not last as long

I fought with my chain to last for 14 k miles, should have replaced sooner. Higher quality new chain has been trouble free for the last 14 k miles, stock sprockets fine.
A carrier bearing giving the wobble, not the cush drive? Replaced?

My stock chain started spitting out O rings at about 2000 miles.....kept it lubed well and stretched it to 15,000 miles then it wouldn't stay tight so I replaced it. I got another o-ring gold chain with 8900 lb tensile strength...... was that enough tensile strength?
