FatDuc - first impressions
Hi all,
Wanted to pass along my experience having just installed a FatDuc on my '08 1100. Obviously it goes without saying, but I have no affiliation and don't know Mr. FatDuc more than I know Valentino Rossi.
Anyhow...I bought my Hyper a few months back and the PO had installed a Project SC slip-on and de-catted it. As such, it was running quite lean and had a lot of low throttle issues such as surging, stalling, popping at high RPMs, etc. All the problems that are well documented here. The best analogy I can come up with is that at times it was like riding a bucking bronco that was absolutely determined to throw you.
I looked into a lot of options such as ordering the race ECU, having my ECU flashed, Bazaaz units, Power Commanders, etc. Obviously the FatDuc was also included in those list of options. I ultimately decided to try the FatDuc first as its the least expensive option. I had very low expectations and frankly thought it was kind of gimmicky, but for $80, what the hell..I'll try it. (30 day guarantee too)
Anyhow, I put it in last night and upon starting it it was really chugging...very low RPM's and seemed to be really bogged down. I let it idle for a while and over the next 3 mins it caught up and was running pretty normal. Took it for a quick test ride of about 3 miles and WOW what a difference. The throttle response was much nicer, no popping, no surging.
Today I commuted with it about 15 miles and it was EXCELLENT. The beast has been tamed and I can actually ride in the resting position with one hand no problem, whereas I never dared do that before. REALLY digging this and am now confident to take it back into some really tight twists and see how it performs there.
Two things that I did notice that are a bit odd...#1, the sound of the motor seems to be quieter. I wouldn't think the mix would change the actual exhaust tone or volume....but I think it did here. #2, the idle seems to actually be a good step higher even though my display still reads 1300 (it did before too). Maybe the idle was below 1300 below and it just didn't display the actual reading?
Anyhow - for those that are having some of the same issues, I'd give 2 thumbs up for the FatDuc based on my experience thus far.
Cheers,
AK

Ive still got a pre-release FatDuc from Mr. FatDuc on my S2R1000. I think this was when Jason was hand making them or something like that. Rossi doesn't have a FatDuc, he is using another item called SloDuc, with great results.

Fatduc on hypermotard (2009 model) can be adjusted.
Fatduc on Multistrada 1200 fixed.

It has a trim setting, but I didn't need to adjust whatsoever. Day 5 and still loving it. Feels like a new bike!
