rubber cush drives hubs ...
ciao all,
for those of you who have lots of miles on your hypertards ... have you had the rubber cush drive hubs fail?
i was cleaning the chain on my hypertard, getting it ready for laguna motogp, and noticed the rear sprocket has some play in it ... and it seems to be the rubber cush drive hubs (all 5) have failed.
will be heading over to nichols tomorrow to get the parts and replace them.
ciao,
johnc

2008 model year ... 24,000 miles.
cannot see any dates on the rubber bits.

What do you considered failed? At some points I can wiggle the sprocket with a noticable click click noise but 2 revolutions of the wheel and it is firmly mounted. I have an 08 3k mi and chain adjusted to the loose side of spec on the swing arm sticker (which is on the tight side I suppose)

not understanding your comment ... "two revolutions of the wheel and it is firmly mounted"
am i to understand that the sprocket wiggles, then after you spin the rear wheel around twice, the cush drives tighten up and there is no wiggle at all?
anyway ... i am heading over to nichols tomorrow to pull the sprocket/carrier off, and inspect the cush drives properly ... and replace if required.

any bike with cush drive parts wear out and need to be changed at some point. it will very on how you ride your bike. cush drive keeps the trans lasting longer .lots of bikes have two sets, one on the back of the clutch hub and the other at the rear sprocket.
so did they fail, the answer is no,they wear out and is part of normal maintenance.
imo i would replace them any time you re do you chain and sprockets.
and for the not so smart ,never just replace a chain or just sprockets ,always do it all at once or it will wear out very fast.

Hello John,
the sprocket wiggles on bikes with lesser mileage as well. I donīt know why that is, but itīs not very uncommon.
Have you checked the price for 1 unit? 40+ Euros per piece. I wanted to replace them, but those guys at Ducati must be smoking crack.
I heard the ones from the 916 series might fit. You might want to bust out a caliper and measure both if you have access to them. The 916 sprockets I owned never wiggled, which leaves me a little puzzled.
Hope to help.

El tardo is pretty much right on.
It is a known issue with the SSS and when the cush drives back out of the sprocket, they will chew through the hub eccentric. Many aftermarket sprockets/carriers (i.e., AFAM, AEM) have a lip to prevent this problem from happening if the cush drive does fail and try to back out. As for the cush drives, you can replace with OEM Motowheels - Quality Motorcyle Parts and Products) OR go big (and spend big) with AEM's titanium drives ( BellissiMoto - AEM Factory Ducati Sprockets and Carrier).
And if you are not replacing the OEM carrier with one with a lip, you can take the OEM sprocket and with a screwdriver, hammer in some dents on the edge of the hole (swingarm side) where the cush drive's go, creating a deformation that will keep them from coming out of the hole towards the eccentric hub.
As for making sure this is your problem, the hollow flange nut bolt will turn freely in the cush drive's rubber bushing if it has failed (the rubber initially molded around the bolt separates). With your mileage (and the Hyper's torque ; -), it would not be too surprising if the cush drive's failed, tho all five would be a bit much, and I would hope your eccentric hub is ok too.
Good luck, let us know what you find.
EDIT: moto and I crossed posts . . .

when i was a carrozzeria dealer we used urethane in the cush drives, lasts longer then rubber but dont get me wrong anything will wear out after time.
when i did supermoto track days i would get 3000 miles before i had to replace the urethane cush drive parts.
like i said before life depends on how your ride/abuse your bike
btw the one is the pic above look nice!!
