Hyper Quick turn throttle mod (With Pics)

Hello all, coming from sportbikes I find the hypermotard throttle turn much to twist my wrist without regriping to go to full throttle. I've written many how to threads on thumertalk and r1 r6 forums but didn't see any detailed instructions on this forum, many have mentioned the mod, but didn't have detailed pics.... So I thought when I did the mod, I would take pics and give you the step by step. (BTW, Total time to install mod takes about 10 min)

This mod reduces the amount you have to turn your wrist to go full throttle, once you try this mod you wonder why every throttle isn't setup this way.

(PLEASE NOTE: do this mod at your own risk.....)

1. I purchased the R1 throttle tube mentioned on this forum..... Installed it and did not find any advantage....

2. Returned that throttle tube and purchased the R6 (2006 model) throttle tube. (yamaha Part number 2CO-26240-00)

3. Take off right hand guard, outside only.

4. Take the two screws that hold the throttle tube on off.

5. Take the throttle tube off.

6. Here is a photo with the stock tube dimensions. (37.1mm)

7. Here is the 2006 R6 throttle tube (41mm)

8. Ok, now you can't install the r6 throttle tube without grinding the two tabs of both sides of the housing.

9. Here is a pic of one side with the two tabs in place.

10. Get a dremel with a large cutoff wheel (2" dia.) and slowly grind the inside tabs off of both sides of the housing.

Here is a pic with the tabs ground off.

11. Clean off all shavings with carb cleaner, etc.

12. Put throttle tube in housings WITHOUT cables to test if the throttle doesn't bind, if it binds of has a bur, take it back off and grind more.

13. Once you have ensured there is no burs and the throttle tube spins without any issue, you can install the cables and reassemble throttle tube on bike.

14. You will notice the throttle is a little tight, you will need to loosen the adjustments near the fuel injection.

Here is a pic of the adjustments, make sure to loosen enough where there is slight play in the cables, SLIGHT play. The cables will bind if you don't give the cables more slack.

15. Once you adjust cables with slack, make sure the throttle snaps back in place without binding.... Enjoy the quick turn.

16. Here is a pic with the before and after twist measurements. You can see by the marks full throttle is now about 3/8" less twist, this doesn't seem like much, but it's the amount you had to readjust your wrist to get full throttle before.

17. Now is a good time to change grips.

18. Get out and enjoy the throttle, you'll swear the bike is faster now!!! haha

19. Please let me know what you think by posting results. Enjoy!!!!

I have a Motion Pro Revolver throttle on my bike. I have to mention that I work there and actually ran a prototype for testing on my bike.
I've been running a 40mm reel on it as the best compromise between twist quickness and keeping the just off idle lurch to a minimum.

Well today we were testing some of our new cam reels on a KTM 950 application so I switched my Hype to a "Street B" version. It starts out at a 38mm ratio and increases to a 48mm. What a difference! Much smoother right off idle and way faster into the power.

I hope this doesn't cross the line into a commercial posting.

Riacom, wow 48mm, will that even fit into the standard housing? That is probably overkill for most. the R6 41mm is probably the most I would want to go. But hell, others may love a much faster than the R6... but I don't see how you could control the low speed response unless initial curve was reduced.

No way. Even the R6 cam doesn´t properly fit the Ducati housing.
Thanks for making the effort taking pix and writing everything down, even if it is quite a simple mod.

I felt it was worthwhile changing the tubes as well.

By the way, you (all others who are interested) should get the RJ11 or RJ15 R6 tube, they´re the same.

Ben, Had to look up what Ricoyam was talking about and it's a entire new assembly for $150+ , this R6 mod can be done for less than $15.

There are many throttle cam systems that will work just fine, this mod is cheap and does the same as the more expensive Cams. This seems to make the throttle twist smoother and eliminates some of the "slop" in the ducati throttle. I've done this on all my bikes and works without any issue, I've even used PVC to create a larger cam system for .15. With PVC you can smooth the initial curve just like the more expensive cam systems.

mbiker,

I suppose 15$ is a bit on the low side. I paid some 30 Euros for the throttle including the housing. It was a good idea to get the housing to be honest. I first thought about trying the Ducati housing and if it should not be working, I wanted to make it fit. I´m glad I didn´t because it looks like it would be a lot of work.

Another thing that could be done is to get a 2mm metal ring fabricated that slides onto the throttle cam. It won´t work properly with the Ducati housing so the R6 setup is the best bet.

Anyway, good info from your side, thumbs up!

The Motion Pro Revolver is a complete throttle system.

The cam reels are new and not mentioned here. The "Street B" cam reel starts out at a mild 38mm diameter and progresses to the 48mm size.
Attached are a couple of pics of the throttle on my bike. This is the prototype unit which is finished in black. The production housing is a silver bronze color.

Nice right up & pics, I just bought the R6 throttle tube and will be trying this mod, I did have a thought though, aren't the "inside tabs" that you ground completly away kind of a internal safety stop? or why would they be there? would it not be better just to grind down the tabs just enough to clear the larger diameter throttle ramp? & leave them intact? Just asking......before I remove mine. Aloha Alex
