So I installed my Leo Vince...

I just got my Leo Vince slipon and cat eliminator last week and gave a fathers day present to myself Sunday morning and put it on. It was an easy straightforward install in spite of the totally useless instructions, and I'm very happy with the fit and finish of the product.

My only issue is that while the quality of the sound is wonderful either way, I find that with the inserts it's a bit too quiet and without it's quite a bit too loud.

The insert in just a smaller opening and pipe with extends inside of the baffles, so I was wondering, has anyone cut the length of the insert to try and produce more volume? Or is it the smaller diameter opening that makes it quieter? or a combination of both?

Any input (or wild ass guess) is appreciated.

By the way, I got the slipons at Houston Superbikes, on sale for $499.

I seem to remember seeing someone who had drilled holes in the inserts for the Termi exhaust until he found the right exhaust note. Maybe that's the way to go with the Leo Vince.

I had the Leos on my 08 and they seemed to get louder as time went by... with the inserts in. When I sold the bike a few months ago I could hear the bike riding away for a good half mile.

I have been thinking about the Leo's myself, definitely one of the cheaper options. What did you do about the ECU? Are you still running the stock air filter?

Funny you should mention the cost... while it's a good deal, I've used Leo Vince on my last 3 bikes and have always been impressed with them. I like the underseat look, I like the stainless steel, and I like that it's an actual 2-1-2 system rather than a 2-1 with an extra can stuck on the side. I considered everything, including the full Termi race system, but I prefer the sound of the LV system also. I'm not trying to see how much power I can make, but the stock cans sounded almost like an RV generator coming down the street.

I guess what I'm saying is that I chose the LV because I like it, regardless of the price.

For the moment I have a stock air filter with an open airbox lid, and I'm running the stock ECU with a FatDuc. Currently with the inserts out, I get the very occasional engine light (a normal thing with the FatDucs), but it smells and feels rich. With the inserts in, it runs very nicely and I smell no unburned gas, but the engine light is on most of the time.

In either case the oil temperature *seems* to be lower, but I don't have a controlled enough environment to be sure.

I have an MWR air filter kit on order (NOT the big orange thing that replaces half of the airbox), and I've inquired about getting the ECU flashed. Mota-lab says they can get me close but not 100% for that setup. Motowheels says they have a map for that system. Both places charge the same amount and say they'll turn it around in one day so I need to decide in the next day or so which route to take.

Sorry, complicated answers to simple questions.

Back to my original post, I've googled the matter and seen many references to shortening the inserts, although nothing specific to LV or the Hyper. It seems like a pretty simple thing though to shorten them by a couple of inches, see what I think, and trim a bit more until I get what I want.

I've had the LV's on my 1100 since 08, zero problems, VERY well made, and they make good HP.
I also thought when I put the LVs on with the db killers in, it was a little too quiet, I used a tubing cutter and shortened them 3/4" and got the exhaust note I wanted, I would start at 1/2" and try them, and if you wanted them louder start cutting the 1/4 at a time, until you get the note you want.

But as a side note I would make them a little quieter than I wanted, because with use, the packing starts breaking down, and the exhaust will start to get louder on its own, now mine "might" be a little too loud, and I will be repacking mine soon. Aloha Alex

thanks guys for all your info, I've been considering LV's for my 796 for a while now, seems they are a good choice...and I'm in a good position to get them well priced; Always thought the 796 was much quieter than the 1100, I'm now wearing earplugs cause its mainly wind not exhaust that i hear...looking forward to the change soon!!!

I have that same LV setup and this year got tired of the engine light coming on so I sent in my stock ECU to Mota-Labs and paid thru Proitalia. I used to just have the stock ECU with a fatduc and it ran OK, but kept getting check engine lights.
They said they would set up my ECU as a DP full system ECU, no O2 sensor or exhaust valve, although no information was sent back with it. It fired right up and sounded good with no check engine lights. I experimented with the inserts and ended up cutting 2/3rds of the insert off and it sounds great. It is at the dealer now getting the TPS reset and a new set of tires so I don't have any riding impressions of the change yet. Good luck with yours!

I ended up taking an inch and a half off and love the sound. I won't mind if it gets just a bit louder, but right now I'm fine with it. Once I have the MWR kit and ECU changed, I'll report back.

you can shorten and lengthen the LV inserts. even cutting off or adding 1/2inch makes a noticeable difference. I cut mine shorter and shorter and then went back longer and longer by cutting pcs of steel elecrical conduit and tapping it on over what was left of the insert (perfect fit). I found that when you lengthen past the stock length it starts to get louder after a point, presumably because you are moving the noise back past the baffles. I ended up with what i liked best which is somewhat louder than the stock baffles.
