Engine light / trouble codes?

Hey folks, having a bit of an issue w my '10 796
Had trouble starting a couple times last week, I'd turn the key on and when I hit the starter button it went dead. I assumed that I had accidentally left it in the "accessory" (?) position (key all the way left, past steering lock - leaves running lights on. If anyone can explain the purpose of this feature I'm all ears) and drained the battery so I bump started it and went on my merry way.
A few days later I'm going down the highway, suddenly grabbed a handful of throttle and the engine light came on and power output was cut/revs were limited to about 4000 (limp-home mode?). I got the bike home and the display read "16109 r.07" According to the manual, an 07 error is a reserve fuel issue.
Not sure if it's related but I had been running the bike without the muffler cans for a few weeks. Power delivery felt the same and everything upstream (lambda sensors and cat) is intact so I doubt it made much of a difference.
Just wanted to get some opinions so I don't go into the dealer clueless or get slapped with a voided warranty for messing with the exhaust.
Thanks

Ok, haha I'll be the dummy. Those cans are completely empty, explain why this is an issue; backpressure? cylinder scavenging? Throttle response didn't change and the increase in sound volume wasn't very significant. Enlighten me Ashton Kutcher...
