Quick question for you Motard Masters..

I have a Streetfighter I am shopping around for something a little more tame for days I just want to cruise. My buddy has a 09 M1100, I love the engine but not a fan of the Monsters so obviously the perfect bike would be the hypermotard..

But I digress... recently searching Craigslist ads I came across this statement in one.

"2008 model year is more desirable then the 2009s and have the same suspension as the 2011s evo sps."

So I am hoping all of you that are more knowledgeable can tell me if there is any truth to this statement.

Hype.

The 2008s have Marzocchi forks (50mm) with either Sachs (standard) or Ohlins (S) rear shocks. The 2009 had KYB forks (48mm) with the same rear shock options.

There are more 2008s around than 2009s and you never hear about any issues with the KYB forks of the 2009s, but it might be a "per capita" thing. The Marzocchis have issues but a lot of it (I believe) is due to Ducati/Marzocchi lying about the spring weight to the valving/oil guys when they built the forks.

In 2010, Ducati went back to Marzocchi and the Evo has the same jacked up forks as the 2008s. The Evo SP has Marzocchis too, they are also just as jacked, but longer to boot so new cartridges (should you decide to go that route) don't fit without losing all of the 30mm of extra travel that you paid for.

The seller is hoping that you're an idiot.....

Well I am damn it!.... Just not when it comes to buying used vehicles.

Thanks for the clarification. I am looking for a everyday ride/ sometimes track bike so lowest price is more important than being in perfect condition so that has me looking at the 08's but the more info I have the better.

Just for the record, in 09 the "S" model had 48mm KYB forks & Ohlins rear, the STD model had 50mm Zokes & sachs rear, just like the base model 08 model. Aloha Alex

out of curiosity, what is 'jacked' about the forks?

What is jacked is the fact that the forks are severely under sprung for non-flyweights... The stock springs accommodate a jockey. So little guys don't need to "spring" for new springs, but big guys should.

Nik's ryght (how'd I do Nik).

The springs only dyno at .66kgs even though Ducati/Marzocchi list them at .85kgs.

To compound this "miscalculation", the suspension is seemingly valved for true .85kg springs, meaning that it is over damped for the .66kg springs that come stock.

Plus, as most of us have discovered, the air gap has been different not only from bike to bike, but from fork to fork, ON THE SAME BIKE!!!

THAT, is my definition of "Jacked".......

Dave
