I just took off the rubber stoppers on either end. Then placed the new engine rod end-on-end against the original engine bolt and slowly tapped it through with a rubber mallet.
I didn't need to put the engine on a stand, as it seems that the frame does support it well - the mounting bolt holes on the engine extend a bit out and into the frame so it seemed well enough supported.
Just don't rush it and gently tap the other bolt through so at least one side is supported by the new bolt and it should all be good.
