Lower Chain Guard?
What's the point of that little fin? I mean, besides making a good chain cleaning a little more difficult? What does is actually guard anyways? I don't need another thing between me and a good chain rub down.

it's there to protect squirrels and bunnies from hopping right into the chain as you speed past them.
and this is rather ironic, given your screen name (hooptygoo)

seriously, pierre advised that this was included in his original design to protect the riders left foot/leg from getting hit by the chain if the riders foot was run over by the rear tire ... as can happen on motocross and supermoto bikes, if one is placing their foot down for cornering and hits an obstacle with their foot, causing it to be jammed back under the wheel.

Itīs mandatory on race bikes for the reasons John already pointed out. To protect your legsand feet from getting caught in the chain drive in case of a crash.

Aha. These things make good sense. Fine, I'll put it back on lest my toes end up looking like that dude's fingers on the gixxer forum. (I'll spare you the pics of that mishap)
