Damaged oil plug: Replacement
Well it's always something! I just did my first oil change on my 2010 Evo. I tightened the oil plug by hand and the flange part of the plug sheared off. I didn't overally tighten the plug but obviously must have. Anyway, I got the oil plug out. Now, where do I get another magnetic one and quickly? Suggestions would be appreciated. By the way, is the torque for the oil plug really 22 foot pounds?
Thanks.

Torque for oil drain plug (on a 796) is 42nm, not sure what that is in pounds.

That's ridiculous! You should be able to rip the threads out of the case before the shoulder breaks. Don't have any suggestions for a source other than the dealer.

I think I would rather have the shoulder fail before the thread is stripped in the case.

While I agree with you that stripped threads aren't good, I have never seen this sort of thing happen to a drain plug.If torqued properly, the threads shouldn't rip. That being said, the drain plug should be able to withstand over-torquing to the point where it will rip the threads. I don't consider weak hardware an over-torquing "saftey feature".

That's the idea, that the plug shears/strips before the case is damaged. Much easier to deal with that way. Belt tensioner bolts have a similar design, ie shear away heads.

OP said that he didn’t use a torque wrench to tighten the drain plug, so we don’t know at what torque valve it was tightened at when it did fail. His question of asking for a confirmation of the torque value of the drain plug @ 22 ft. lbs.; and stating that he tightened it by hand, gives me reason to believe that he tightened it without the use of a torque wrench.

Learn something new every day. Are these one time use kinda' things? I would think that multiple torquings on a fastener like that would weaken it. How far over the specified torque do you have to go before they snap?
