newbie question, I went and looked at a hyper today
so I went to look at a hypermotard today, I drove 3 hrs to see it, get there and its filthy! As a seller i would think a wash would be in order but not in this case. so the filth scared me a little but maybe it just needs a wash so I keep looking it had not been droped or anything but ...
when I looked at the oil in the sight window it was milky like a caramel color but very opaque. I didnt buy it because I felt like it wasn't taken care of. Was this a good call? or is that normal? i should also mention that it had 9000 miles

Could have been water in the oil. If so, it would likely have to be from condensation, because the Hyper has no liquid cooling system that could cross-contaminate the oil.

Milky thing happened to me but from searching around here it's supposed to be normal for a bike that hasn't been ridden too much especially if it's sitting around in cold weather.

well how long do you think had he not changed the oil for it to get like this. Is this like long term negligence or just pretty normal if you dont change your oil often?

there was a period where it sat around for a couple of weeks this winter and I got on to ride and noticed this and freaked out a little about it. in my research on these forums someone mentioned that it is indeed condensation and it's normal and tends to happen if you end up taking short trips and she doesn't get up to temperature and stay there for awhile. my commute is only 10 miles none on the highway and it'd been heated gloves and full insulated leathers cold so i'm sure that had something to do with it not being to get up to decent temp for a long enough.
There's some thoughts about it in this thread: am i killing my hyper?

The foggy white/carmely sight glass is normal. Happened to my bike too. Looked like someone hocked a loogy on the sightglass and it had me worried as I had new oil in there too so I thought "was it the oil that did this? something wrong with my engine?" All I had to do was take the bike out for a good long ride, get the engine nice and hot and when done take the oil filler cap off until she is completely cooled down. Sight glass is now clear as can be. Only usually happens when I don't ride for a while and start it in cold weather. Just don't forget to put the filler cap back on!
In terms of your search for a used hyper check out the for sale adds here as there are plenty. Looks like there are some in your area too. I'd pass on someone trying to sell a dirty hyper - definatly shows lack of care for the bike, esp if you are trying to sell it.

Well maybe not the whole thing in that any guy who doesn't wash a bike he wants to sell ya probably didn't take care of it that well anyway!

How much was he asking? Give him a dirty bike low ball. Might still be a deal there
