180 vs 190 rear?

Anyone rode both, on a Hyper?
Whats the consensus?
ANY benefit with the 190?

depends on which tire brand. if you go to the manufactures websites it will say the rim size they recommend. example bt003rs say a 190 is for a 6 inch rim, dunlops Q2's and NTECs 190's say they both can fit a 5.5 inch rim.

most forums say the 190 gives more of a contact patch when cornering, all i noticed is the the 190 is usually a taller tire and will make the rear of the bike taller which puts more weight on the front end.

I'm not sure why you would want to spend the money and go backwards in handling.

The bike/rim was designed for a 180 tire. You're not pushing the tire beyond it's traction limits consistently with the 180 now. Why add the extra width to interfere with the handling characteristics and the extra weight to interfere with the power characteristics.

Not to mention that added cost to interefere with the upgrade characteristics.

I have read that the 190 actually delivers a smaller contact patch than the 180 and after seeing a 190 on a rim designed for a 180 I believe it.

I am on my 3rd set of tires and went with the scorpion trail in 190 this time.

So far I have noticed great wet and dry traction and an improved ride (smoother).

IMO you need to stick with the tire size that is designed for the rim size. In general a 5.5" rim takes a 180 and a 6.0" rim takes a 190.
I don't think it's in your best interest to deviate from that (or the mfg's guidelines).

But I'll tell you what I thought when I tried both back to back, Both 1098's; mine with the stock 190 and my buddy's with a TC2 180:

We were doing a canyon ride and had plenty of room to push the tires a little (for the street mind you - not the track)

The 190 seemed to take more effort to get into a turn but stayed where you put it and was very stable in a corner

(Remember here the 180 is on the wrong size rim) To me the 180 was twitchy and and a bit wobbly in comparison.
The bike was easy to turn in, a bit more nimble, and very unstable in a turn, but it was easy to adjust your line while in a deep lean.

I liked the 190 better on my 1098... (and it was designed for that tire) The 180 made me lack confidence on that bike.

The HM is a different bike, if it were me I'd stick with the stock size on the hyper.

Dave,
Im not consistently pushing the traction limits of the 180 now?
Your right, I havent put 1/10 of a mile on my hyper. Its been disassembled in my garage since the day after it arrived.

Have you riden both widths to give a real life example of the change in characteristics?

It seems that there should be a definite difference in the handling with the taller and wider rear, I was hoping for someone who has rode both.
Maybe a benifit/hinderance list.
Is there ANY benifit to the taller wider rear?
Adding a taller and wider rear would require some suspension setup, most dont have their sag set properly, much less compensating for a taller rear tire by adjusting the front.

Actually, I have. Not on the Hyper, mind you, but on several other bikes.

The info that flynbulldog posted is correct, although it would have been a bit (just a bit) different if the 180 tire was on a 5.5" wheel.

I don't know everything, I have proven that here before, but you asked for opinions in an open forum......and I had one.

.....and no, you are not pushing your 180 rear to it's limits (consistently, like I posted originally) on the street. Whether you had .1 miles on your Hyper or 1,000,000 miles on your Hyper.

I'll explain my last statement further if you wish. It wasn't meant to be degrading, just factual.

Dave
