belt change

I was talking to a man the other day and he said that it was very difficult to change the belts on the hyper. I would like to ask you guys if this is a difficult job as i had thought of doing it my self. On as earlier post i was told of a site that sold the belts cheap but if it is a hard task then i will have to go to the dealer

changing the belts themselves isn't very difficult. It is setting the tension that is important.
here are some youtube videos for you to watch that will give you the knowledge that you need.

and the more updated one with a more accurate way to measure tension

I checked the tension on mine using the method in the first video. Use the search function in this forum and you can find other posts of others who have used the same method as me.

this got me inspired to do it right. I just downloaded the software used in the 3rd video and I bought a cheap computer mocrophone for $0.99 off of fleabay.

So I'm reading the factory manual, and I know they are always notoriously 'over engineered' in those manuals. It says to 'remove the tank' before taking off the belt covers. That looks like overkill. To do tension [to get the covers off] is that needed?

no way. you can easily remove the covers with the tank, seat and most everything else still attached. They take some fumbling and angling before you can fish them out of there, but trust me they come out. I plan on checking my tension at least once/year now that I have the cheapo ebay mic and freeware guitar tuning software.

Curious,,,,

How many people on this forum actually change there own belts?
And have there ever been any screw-ups or tales of woe?
I'm interested in having a try at changing them one day.
Can someone post a link to a belt supplier?

I would assume [haven't done the belts myself] that everyone will suggest the exact fits from the ducati-tech / CA-Cycleworks videos you posted. Seems like a pretty stand up guy. [and not just because he's an ex-Aprilia RS250 racer like me]

once I am ready to replace mine, I will go with the exact fit. Reading their description on ca-cycleworks, it seems that they contacted exact-fit to have them made to be as close to oem as possible.

I used the exact fit from CaliCycle....was not impressed with the fact that they were made in China. I don't think even they were impressed as they stamped Made in PRC instead of China.

Yes the covers come off very easily. A little fumbling at first and you do have to disconnect a couple of the quick disconnects on the wiring harness.

Comparded to my 900SS the Hyper was incredibly easy. The pulley kept popping out of position on the SS but stayed perfectly still on the Hyper....took like 10 seconds to pop slip it in.

I used the allen wrench method on both the SS and the Hyper. It is much tighter on the Hyper however, I think like 2.5mm and 3mm if I recall correctly. I check it regularly every 1000 miles or so and everything checks A-ok.

Make sure you turn the engine by hand a few times after installation to make sure nothing is amiss.
