Electronic Controlled Chain Oiler

If someone is interested to install an electronic controlled chain oiler, here is my experience after 8000km with the McCoi system, which I mounted early 2010.

McCoi is a micro-processor controlled chain oiler. The system consists of an electronic control unit, oil tank, oil pump, nozzle and a moisture sensor. The oil is injected onto the front or rear sprocket. The centrifugal forces then dispense the oil onto the chain.

The controller controls the lubrication intervals depending on travel distance, average speed and wet/dry track. A separate switch allows for extra lubrication after you cleaned the chain or if you drive in rough conditions.

Since the McCoi is an open source project, you need to solder all electronic parts and bend all brackets. McCoi Unfortunately the page is mainly in german :-(

Here are a few pics how I have done it:

Since the whole thing is a low cost DIY kit you can design the nozzle as single or dual injector. There is a long discussion on McCoi's webpage (in german) about pro and cons. 90% of the users have a single nozzle and that's what I have done. Since you use oil rather than grease both O-ring sides and the contact area between chain and sprockets are nicely lubricated. Originally the kit was designed for motor cross bikes. What works for them works for the road as well. BTW - I use motor chain saw oil.
