Can you change cam with engine in the frame
I would like to know if its possible to replace the cam with the engine in the frame. The fuel thank is already removed and the air box too. I see no reason that it can'T be done, but my tuner said it prefer to have the engine remove to do the job, but its a pain in the ass. I would prefer to do it in place.
If you have experience with it please let me know what you think !

I don't know off hand why you'd need more room/clearance than what is needed to shim the valves in order the remove and replace the cam shafts on a Ducati L-twin in its frame. Maybe he doesn't have a lift?

No need to remove the engine at all, you have truck loads of space on both sides and with the tank and air box off you can access the the shims easy as, tell him to harden up and get on with it.
Don't take any excuses that it will take longer either because it won't, he has a perfect engine stand already in place.

I had a former ferraci guy helping me with my valve check. He went over the steps to change out the cams,. none of which involved removal of the engine. It seems pretty straight forward, actually. Some day I may throw a set in there.

i did my cams in my shed. other than the cam sprocket nuts all went well. i made all the tools (degree wheel, sprocket holder, and socket and plug hole stopper for stopping the piston for setting tdc.
if you want to borrow these it's not like i use them a lot or will need them this winter.
when i installed my cams i advanced the timing slightly and like the torque it brought out.
have new cam nuts and access to lots of shims because you will have to do a whole new setup not just a check. i had to replace every shim. i went to the trouble of sanding every shim down to specs. it made the valve train very quiet and i like to think it helped.
if you need any help just let me know. this was the first time i had ever touched a ducati motor so i went slow and easy and double and tripple checked everything and it only took a day.

Thank you very much for the offer!
Thank you very much for the offer joshuaz2!
I willl consider doing it myself, i have done complere rebuilt on YZF,RMZ,Beta,GSXR in the past so with the right tool i can't imagine having so much trouble with the timig of my HM. The only thing tha bug me a bit is that i never work with Desmo set-up. Is it very difficul to work with that?
Do i need special tool to change the shim?
Last things, its because my tuner know the right timing number to pull the best result with this cams, i don't.

What do you really gain when adjusting the timing in terms of torque or HP?
My dealer/tuner said that he has played around with different timing for the cams but that it never really made any significant difference....

You move the torque/HP peaks up or down in the rev range. Stock hyper hits its peak before top revs are achieved, probably due to the restricted airbox that strangles at peak revs.
