fuel pump on the cheap 916/996/748 and other models edition

This is specific to my 748 but it applies equally to other bikes.

The fuel pump on my 748 had failed and I was browsing the classifieds for a used pump and I thought to myself:
"There is no reason Ducati made Bosch make an exclusive pump for them. They probably got an off the shelf part"

So I pulled my pump and took it out from the fuel pump assembly. I then looked at the Bosch Part Number 0 580 453 408.... Then I googled and found the essential specs:
pressure 3.0 bar (43.5psi)

Looking around and no local store had the Bosch part...... I had a sad on my face But google revealed that Airtex (E8229), Carter, AC Delco (EP389) all make emulations of the part with the SAME proportions, specs etc

So I went out and bought the Airtex part from Ebay (NAPA, Autozone Advance Auto had them too) for only 42 bucks (yes 42) Local stores had em for 130+

Only thing that is needed is to take the plastic pickup tube from the old pump by removing the metal circlip/snapring (this is a pain) and transferring the pickup tube to the new pump with a new circlip/snapring from Lowe's ($1)
total tab: 43 bucks

pics:

Bosch pump on right, Airtex on left (same connector layout)

plastic pickup tube transfered over and snapring installed. (the one pictured is the old one from the Bosch but I got a brand new one from Lowe's because the old one had lost its "snapiness" during the removal struggle. I recommend to NOT reuse)

my understanding is that Honda, Mazda at least have used this specific Bosch pump on the civic, miata, mx-6 and maybe even more makes and models but don t quote me on that

just thought I'd share

feel free to comment/ask question/google your heart out

for reference go here

click on "part search" and enter E8229 to find out what other vehicles apply this same pump
the list is GIANT

www.mcmaster-carr.com

9464K548 Viton O-Ring, AS568A Dash Number 247

According to McMaster-Carr, they are 0.139" thick with dimensions of 4.609" ID x 4.887" OD (converted, I get 3.5mm thick and 117mm ID x 124mm OD).
or better yet $5.50 for the O0ring from desmotimes

Toyota Corrolla 1998-2002 ( Toyota p/n 23211-46070 & 23221-21020)
Mazda 626 1992-1994
Aftermarket: IFP Indiana 912 or GE 043

I didn't want to post this before as it could affect some site sponsors who supply pumps, but now it's general knowlege here is some more info as this is what I fitted to the 748 over the wet season refit.

Also the filter I took out was a Mahle KL145 (BMW I think) they are cheaper than the Ducati part but identical)
I didn't replace it as I fitted the filter externaly, so now I don't have to worry about scratching the tank when replacing it,

I find it absurd that used Bosch fuel pumps go for 150 bucks in the classifieds when even the Bosch original can be found in so many other vehicles
