.002” for closers and .005” for openers

Soo.. Maybe instead of saying "you're wrong!" you could help the rest of us out and post said values and the difference between the assembly and inspection readings? Just a thought...

i think the .002-.005 are the numbers to strive for when doing your clearance's.ducatis origial specs had a pretty big range that was great for not needing adjustments ,but flawed for optimum performance

Any chance someone posts the clearances in milimeters ? Both optimum and the whole range ?

Thank you.

So optimal clearances are for openers: 0.05mm and for closers: 0.127mm

Right ?

My factory service manual gives the following clearances for the standard Testastretta head:

Opening rocker arm
Intake Clearance:
Nominal 0.20 mm
Operation 0.18–0.23 mm
Check 0.10–0.25 mm
Exhaust Clearance:
Nominal 0.20 mm
Operation 0.18–0.23 mm
Check 0.10–0.25 mm

Closing rocker arm
Intake Clearance:
Nominal 0.15 mm
Operation 0.13–0.18 mm
Check 0.10–0.25 mm
Exhaust Clearance:
Nominal 0.15 mm
Operation 0.13–0.18 mm
Check 0.10–0.25 mm

The manual gives three values:
Operation - Installation Value
Check - Value when checking during normal services
Nominal - Mean clearance which would be the spot-on clearance

The Nominal for Openers is: 0.20mm (.008")
The Nominal for Closers is: 0.15mm (.006")
Both could be within a range of 0.10mm ~ 0.25mm (.004"~.010"). My understanding is this clearance assures extended periods between adjustments (not a bad thing for the street rider who racks up more than 6,000 mi. per year) and assures, as the valves get hot and change length (as they do on the street), they still have a bit of lash in the valvetrain.

valve adjustment testa

Ok, now I am all f**d up.
the manual states something different. when did Ducati come out with the new numbers and where?
also, when you guys do your Testa valves, do you take measurments like the Ducati manual shows? I am doing one today and taking numbers from the opening and closing rockers and cam lobes like Ducati shows in the book..Am I wrong?

thanks,
