Dzus Conversion for Fairing Assembly, ST4
I finally got around to installing the Dzus, 1/4 turn, fasteners on my ST4. It was fairly straightforward. Some of the female receptacles were the clip on style, and where those wouldnt work, I used the rivet type. If you have ever taken the fairings off of an ST, its like a chinese puzzle, and you have to remove all the fairings just to get to the battery! Now its a snap. Have included some pics too.

Mike -- Call me simple, but I'm looking at a fairing that says ST3......  In any event, I'm currently trying to put together an order for my ST3, and I'd very much like to ask you some questions about your experience with this project. I'll PM you.

Right you are. I had an accident where a buddy got his foot caught between his brake and his footpeg. He barreled into me and knocked me off my bike. The bike fell over onto a curb and cracked the original fairing. I bought this ST3 fairing on Ebay and put it onto my ST4. Fits perfect. Someday I may paint it but for now its functional.

I've been thinking of this mod off and on myself. Desmotimes even sells that kit for the upper. My question is, how does it effect the fit and "put-togetherness" of the fairing compared to the original well nuts? I did something similar with my 01 SS by modifying the bottom edge of the lowers with 4 DZUS fasteners. It made the panels a lot easier to get on and off, but in all honesty, it didn't fit as tight as it did with the well nuts. I used the clip on type, and they would slip around a bit.

The clip on female receptacles that I bought really fit tight. You almost cant move them once you slip them on. My fairings actually fit better than they did with the rubber inserts. When I first took the fairings off (with the rubber inserts) I struggled on reassembly. I couldnt get the holes and inserts to line up very well. When assembling the new Dzus fittings I compensated where I had to and now have a better fit. Also, its so much easier to connect the Dzus fittings. The male finds the female much easier, if you know what I mean :>).
About half of the female receptacles I used were the rivet type. Sometimes I had to cut off one of the ears and only use 1 rivet to secure it to the fairing. It is still very secure.

No, there was a fellow on the ST list that was selling them a few years ago and I bought a kit from him. I think it cost about $125 but I got quite a few extra parts too.

I have the same problem on my RS250 that just got Sharkskinz. It has the clip on type that have a spring built into it. Not like regular Ducati ones that mount onto the frame. Makes taking these things off a pain as they move around. Also the clip is I'm sure grinding into the bodiwork where it's mounted. My opinion is the clip types are a POS method except if they have an area in the frame for them and are held in by a screw or something.
Any suggestions? Would the ones that look like the Ducati clips work better?
