I have the GoPro HD 1080p cam and rarely film with that setting. I use the cam to film me while riding at track days. I record in the 720P 30 fps setting for smaller file sizes, easier to load, smoother playback in MovieMaker and I use the 5.9-6.9 Mbps playback to retain the 16X9 size. My goal was to keep it simple, easy, and quick to edit and upload to Youtube.
My computer plays the 1080p video fine, but in MovieMaker 2.6, or MM Live, the video is jerky.

Features lacking with 960P camera
1) 1080p setting
2) 720P 60fps setting
3) No BUS port for soon to be released expansion Batterypack/LED screen
If I was on the market today, knowing what I know, and wanting a simple process, the 960 would be choice. Buy the cam, 1 16MB card, and an extra battery and film away.
Here's a GoPro forum detailed some of the challenges.

P.S.
The HD cams are light yrs better than the SD versions.
Better video
Better audio
Better battery solution
larger SD capacity
DO NOT BUY a SD VERSION!!
