new Ipod shuffle: perfect for the road
I picked up one of the new ipod shuffle yesterday, I clip it on my helmet strap and got it rocking, to change music, just bring the hand to the strap, it takes 2 seconds. and for 50$ you can't go wrong ! I won't be surprised if I see a bunch of riders with shuffles hanging off their necks in the next few months

What headphones do you use? I normally use some Etymotic hf2's but with the custom inserts i had made as well as sticking out slightly they are unbearable under my helmet (my helmet is a very snug fit + balaclava). Also they are a little dangerous since they isolate a little too well. Might consider investing in a shuffle as well for road music too.

I use the headphones that the shuffle came with, so I can get 30% music and 70% street noise

You guys do realize that using headphones on a motorcycle is a spectacularly bad idea, right?

I wouldn't say spectacularly, you still hear more than a cager with the radio on.

I'll have to take your word for that since I never use headphones. But, my concern is motivated by the cyclists I have read about who never heard the train or car or whatever and are now dead. And, recently in Willimantic, CT, the guy on a push scooter who was wearing headphones and didn't hear the tractor trailer. Not dead but life-starred out to Hartford (CT) Hospital. Personally I wouldn't get on a bike without a helmet or with headphones. Just hate to think someone could be killed or injured because of it.

bruce,
I fail to see the logic of this. Do you know how many bike riders wear earplugs to cut out wind (and other) noise. This is recommended by medical and safety people.
My opinion is that motorcycle riding is dangerous and that you should ride using all your senses, but hearing is the least important.

I ride all the time with earplugs but it doesn't distract me like music does. You may be right that hearing is not as important as, say, vision but even if it gives me only a 5% advantage, I'll take it. (FWIW, on a bicycle, hearing is really important.)

Reducing volume and introducing a new set of sounds to distract you are two different things.
