Helmets, which is best for the money
First off, I'd like to mention that a couple of months ago my Icon Alliance helmet has hit the pavement pretty hard (unfortunately my head was in it at the time). Is it true that once a helmet has been through a crash, it needs to be replaced because the core shell breaks?
If this is true, what helmet should I get? There are so many out there to choose from and the local motorcycle dealers are VERY limited on helmets. My local options are pretty much the top of the line Arai ranging from $500-$900 and the lowest on the food chain HJC for under $100 which I think are crap. I want something good but don't really need the outrageously expensive ones. I'd consider anything up to $400. I should also mention that I have a weird, sort of OCD, in which I like stuff to match in certain ways. I don't mean necessarily color, but since I have an Italian bike, leather suit, boots, and gloves, I'd really like to complete the set with an Italian helmet, which is why I've been looking at AGV and Suomy. However, I welcome any suggestions.

Definitely replace the crashed helmet, the foam on the interior that protects your head in a crash compresses and does not regain it's protective shape, leaving a void in the impacted area that you may not see under all the lining.
AGV or Suomi are great helmets with plenty of protective and comfort features to keep you happy and safe for a long time.

I have a Suomy Spec1R Hodgeson coming up for replacement and love it! however I am curious about the new Bell Star helmets (which if I like it it will be the only helmet I'll leave my Suomy for)

Don't they all need to pass a minium tests ..
The better ones should be less noisy ,possibly lighter...maybe more comfy..
Find one that fits your head...
My $100 full face is noisy as hell..
My more expensive flashy Shoei is quieter has the nose piece to stop fogging up in the cold and has a chin mesh piece to keep the cold out ...
Then you can go all outand spend $1000 and up ...
they should all do the same basic minimum protection...

I think that the current value king of helmets are the Scorpion Exo 750 helmets. I have one and it's pretty nice. The anti-fog screen that it comes stock with is very effective. It could be lighter, it could flow some more air and it could also be a bit more quiet, but I could shit gold... that would be nice too.

Who uses a value helmet. the three things you list would make that helmet a fail for me.

nothing worse than a loud uncomfortable helmet that doesn't fit , some makes just don't fit some heads...
Newest models are most expensive ...

You know, I worded that wrong... any helmet I've ever tried on could be quieter, lighter and whatever. The scorpion does all of those things pretty well and it has some very nice features.
I'm looking to purchase a Nexx X1R1 pretty soon and I can get one for $295 special one off deal. I rode with it for a little while and I found that it does all of these things for better. Because I'm getting it for a good price, it makes sense for me, but I don't think that it does it twice better for almost twice the price. Also, it's lacking a few things like the anti-fog treatment.
