Leather suits, boots, and gloves
I recently bought my first ducati, a 2010 1198, and I plan on going to the local track for the first time. I've never done this before so I will be doing the new rider track school and for that I need to get a leather suit, proper gloves, and boots. I've been looking online at various places and they all seem very expensive. Any suggestions on what I should get and where to get it from?? I would really like to stay under $1000 for the suit, boots, and gloves altogether.
Thanks,
Alex

It's going to be tough, but you can beat the pricepoint. You just may not get all of the features that quality brands may offer.
I will post what I have. I can't complain about any of these items:
Dainese Laguna Seca one piece suit.
Sidi Vertigo Corsa boots
A* GP Tech gloves.
Bargain hunting and whatnot got me these pieces for about $1100-1200.
You can get a lower level Sidis boot for about $250 or you can get a pair of Bilt track boots for $70. I would opt for the Sidis but it is up to you. Same could be said for suits or gloves.
If you are just going to track it, you may consider a 2 piece suit. I have a one piece, but don't use it unless I go to the track, which isn't as often as I would like unfortunately.
So, if you want the cheapest setup look at cycle gear or lightly used stuff. I would go ahead and spend the money on good boots and gloves at least because you can use those regularly.
Depending on the track, you may be able to rent the leathers that would make it a bit cheaper...
Good luck. It is a blast taking the bike to the track.

Thanks for the info! I guess I forgot to mention that I am strongly leaning towards a 2-piece suit just because I want to use the jacket on a more regular basis riding around town. I just have a textile jacket now, but after my accident from this summer I really want a leather one, so I might as well kill 2 birds with one stone. As far as I've seen online, I really like some of the cheaper Alpinestars and Dainese gear. Those add up to about 1100-1200 like you said, but I was just wandering what are more reliable online stores that would also sell stuff cheaper. Since the motorcycle event at my local track are hosted/organized by the Ducati dealership, they rent out suits for about 100 bucks. I will do this next month because I don't see the point in spending so much money now to buy one when I'm only going to need it this one time (only 1 even left for this year at the track), so I will most likely just buy one next spring.

You might be better off getting a seperate jacket and pants that zip together--because the two piece jackets tend to run a little short to be used by themselves.
Dainese makes a very protective 2 piece suit though:
DAINESE 2011 "Avro Div" 2-Pc. Suit $899
SIDI makes a very good boot for only $200 Sidi Fusion
Dainese has a few good ones on close out: DAINESE "Torque Out" Boot
Dainese has a few very good gloves at reasonable price:
DAINESE 2011 "Carbon Cover" Gloves
Contact matt@motowheels.com or call the shop at 916.369.2509. He can make you a pretty good deal on a high quality and protective 2pc Suit (or jacket/pants), boots and gloves. He'll make sure you are fitted correctly as well.
If you would rather order online, I can give you a coupon code for discounts.

i'd say dainese is top of the line. but for you case, you might be better of getting two pieces, or used.

I would heed Moto's post above. Yes, he's a forum sponsor and obviously wants to sell, but their prices are really competitive especially with their VIP discounts and the customer service is really top notch.
The thing about getting a dedicated two piece suit is that, yes... the top jacket is too short. It's not going to work with just jeans. However, if you look at getting a solid jacket and solid pants that are fine stand alone, they will connect to form a good secure fit. Still, for a track, I would presume that a good one piece will offer the most protection.
If the Dainese kits are too expensive, I would suggest the Alpinestars suits. They're very inexpensive and are really well made. Look at this one from Sportbiketrackgear.com.
Alpinestars CR One Piece Leather Race Suit Black from SportbikeTrackGear.com
It's only $599 and that leaves all the other pieces Moto suggested. If at all possible, however, I would do the Dainese suits from Moto. It's more money, but none of that money is fluff. They're quality stuff.

thanks, i already looked at sportbiketrackgear. i've already bought boots and gloves from there, and as of right now i'm pretty set on the AlpineStars Carver 2-piece. i won't buy it yet because there's no point since i won't ride my bike much until spring. oh and yes, i was rather disappointed to find that most 2-piece suits have a shorter jacket than a typical one, but according to sportbiketrackgear reviews, the Carver 2 has a longer jacket so it looks more natural with jeans

wow! thanks mr. salesman! of course you're gonna advertise Dainese if that's what your store has. someone who sells alpinestars would say completely the opposite thing. Do you really think i got a $17,000 Ducati just because one guy at the Ducati dealership said it was cool and he thought Ducati makes the best bikes???
