question about holes in a helmet
someone is selling a nice arai helmet on craigslist. had the seller e-mail me some pictures and it looks like he drilled three holes on the top side of the helmet. I e-mailed him back asking why he would do such thing but hasn't responded.
Now my questions is, I always thought that once u drop a helmet on the ground its crap because the foam padding cracks and thats what takes the impact instead of your head. So wouldn't these holes in the helmet make this helmet useless?
The only reason I see that he might have done this is to mount a camera or something.
any input on if this helmet is still good or not? thanks

In most cases it will render the helmet unsafe. 1/8" holes can weaken the helmet when subjected to impact, where the hole will give the impact somewhere to relieve the stress of the impact by cracking or opening at that hole and beyond. The difference between a drilled hole and a manufactured hole is that the factory hole will have reinforcement built into/around the hole to prevent those issues.

what DT998 said.
Holes will prevent energy from dissipating across the shell as designed.

did some more reading online and just as I thought this helmet is garbage.
What baffles me is why in the world anybody would do this to a $600 helmet. What makes it worse is that he is a ducati rider.

Drilling holes won't make the helmet useless.
I would make a fine plant pot.

Could be an RX7 with a vent missing. I'd like to see those pics.
