No not all they were wide open with zero restrictions. What you saw on Colin's bike was a dumb can for marketing. Keeping the sponsors happy.

MotoGP sucks because the bikes are so loud, you can't have a conversation with anyone next to you. Ear plugs are pretty much mandatory for anyone even near the track.
Wanna know a funny story, I was bitching about the noise levels to Roberts guys and one of them said it was Kenny himself who pushed them to go loud. He thought it was a good idea to make MotoGP bikes super loud because it brings more attention to the action. Personally I think its stupid, superbikes are loud enough and being able to talk with the person sitting next to you and enjoy a good laugh/conversation mid race is nice.

When I hear videos of these bikes they sound loud but not too loud. Guess I'll have to go to Laguna Seca next year and hear them in person

Lemme say this, 130 decibels is no joke. Thats louder then standing in front of the speakers at a rock concert. You can hear the bikes idling outside the garage from the other side of the race track talking with someone and listening to the radio!

I knew they were gonna be loud but I was blown away when the first one went by! Made the super bikes sound like they had oem exhaust.

..I saw that exhaust again....it's definitely something on there....but not a SuperTrappe type end.....they all had some sort of end cap....could they be louder than 130.....and limited to 130dbs as Alexio stated?....Interesting as IIRC there is a cap on MC DBs in that area. SPEED did alot of pit coverage during their qualifying special and they seemed to absolutely shriek out of the pits.....and that was on TV....

I agree that when you hear them for the first time on Friday morning practice it's almost awe-inspiring. You just can't believe something can be that loud... to me, it definitely adds to the experience, not detracts. Some bikes like the Rizla Suzuki come idling out of the pits sounding very "cammy", with an intermittent exhaust sound like WOP WOP WOP WOP... almost like a marine speedboat engine. The Ducatis are a little boomier, kind of dirty sound. The Hondas sound like computer renditions, super smooth.... but this is all at idle.
When they accelerate into turn one for the first time, it absolutely makes your neckhair tingle. I would "treat myself" by removing earplugs occasionally, but only for very short periods... these bikes will destroy your hearing in one sitting IMO. Fun is for a day... tinnitus is forever.
WOP- WOP - WOP -WAAAAAAARRRRRRR----WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEEEEEEEEpopBOOMWAAAAAAAAAAApopBOOM-WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

That 130 decibel limit is what they announced over the PA.
Now, as a comparison that's how loud the F16 fighter jets on the flight line were (as they passed 100ft away) when they took off loaded with fuel and live ordinance, using full afterburner, to get airborne. That's frick'n loud.
And these damn bikes were JUST as loud. They were bad-ass, for sure. It does wear on you after a while. Personally I didn't feel like hanging out all weekend without ear plugs. I think the Ducati 2 up rides they were doing were on a Desmo and that bike was loud but not offensive.
The foam plugs are good for about a 30db reduction, so even with ear plugs those damn things were loud. Oh well, once a year
