Yep, I should have said, "Replace mine AGAIN."
Here's something that's ironic. My first tank - which did not expand for the first three years - came without a rubber O-ring in the filler neck. Gas leaked out and stained the engine cases. The dealer said that he could get me new cases but I didn't take him up on his offer because the engine was going to be out of sight with the fairings installed . . . and I didn't want to "bother" Ducati. I should have "bothered" Ducati.
Every time I crank that bike up it gives me such a visceral feeling. Then logic takes over and I wonder if the tank will come off during the ride.

As my bike is at the dealer to replace the VR and battery, I asked them to take a look at the tank as well, since I discovered pimples, and the right side is way more loose compared to the left.
This resulted in that they also ordered a new tank from Ducati, but I have no idea how long It will take until we actually receive it. It's my first replacement, and the bike is not even two years old, so I think I might wait with the 'coating,' until I come closer to the 5-year limit...
My concern is that if I have it coated now, and it for some reason would swell anyway, I"ll have to pay for my next tank since the warranty is voided. I keep going back and forth on this decision since both options make sense to me...

Welcome to the official worriers club. It is a shame that we have to spend time considering this. I should have kept my 04 metal-tanked Monster. Back then I only thought about what the next ride would be.

New tank installed
Ok, got my first replacement installed. Bike is 1.5 years old. Took 2 months to get. New one looks great cosmetically. About 1/16" play at the mount, which is fine. Now will watch it closely and see how long it lasts...

As for the coating thing, I was told that any changes to the "structure or the integrity of the fuel tank" would eliminate the EPA mandated 5 year rule.
Would make me believe that if Ducati or its contractor didn't coat the tank it might not be replaced.
Personally I'm in the school of use the bike like you'd use any bike, let the tank be replaced as often as I can get one. I am taking the bike in to have it verified that it needs its 3rd tank. My 5yr stint is up April 2011 so I will coat this one.

I'm on my second tank and the paint has started to bubble again. I'm having it replaced before my 5 year emissions warranty ends next month. I will have this one coated, is there a preferred coating to use?
