I did it.

The installation is very much as AZ_Scott described in his Speedzilla posting. (Nice post!)

I was able to use the same brackets for the fluids cylinders but just spun/installed to a different clocking to allow for clearances.

I also Dremel'd the nubs off the throttle and electrical housings so I can install them to my liking.

Additionally, I took the advice and trimmed off some of the underside of the fairing lip for clearance. (Left side only)

I rode through Ortega Hwy twice to get the feel of this mod and I have to say it is much better.

My hands numbed a bit but I think it was the extreme cold over the mountain pass.
(I wasn't sure if it was the bar vibration but I'll blame the weather first.)

However, my wrists did hurt again after a while and I think (after reading all the threads again) I should rotate the bars toward me. They are currently in the "default" location.

Since I am so used to the bike, I let a buddy who rides a CBR ride it for a second (and comfort spoiled) opinion. He found that he really liked the position however; the handles needed to be rotated a bit. He also found the overall grip pretty wide. We're both same height and weight (5'9") and found ourselves riding/supporting/holding on by the thumb/index finger webbing too much.

Once I rotate the bars, I should be good.

I'll add some pics tonight.

The PS is time travel to the mid 70s! Albeit with greater reliability. Does the fairly mount look conducive to modification? If fabrication of new mounting hardware allowed raising the fairing, some higher bars might then be possible.

Looking forward to the pics.

How much higher were you able to go with the new DP risers in comparsion to just removing the spacer and using the original clip-ons?

It goes about 1.25" up and about .75" back toward you.

I just rotated the bars enough to not pinch my hand on the tank at full lock.

I rode around on it and it feels good.

Almost there with the pics. :-)

Exclamation

I rotated the grips even more than the photos show and they are very comfortable. I also slightly re-clocked those brake and clutch lines where they attach to the bolt(s) so that they don't rub.

(let the ape hanger ridicule begin)

I really like it, now.

The fairing is still there and still looks retro...if I didn't say, ya wouldn't know.

Remember, you can always bring them back even more if you adjust the steering stops out a little. You lose a little bit of turning radius, but you can still make a decent U-turn.

It's amazing how much difference a few millimeters of adjustment can make in your comfort level!

Yes! Those few millimeters make a big difference.

I have set the bars to go as far back as possible without hitting the tank or pinching my hand on the tank at full lock.

My steering stops are set to the max where I lose turning radius but that's ok. I can still make a decent U-turn. (I never hit the stops anyways.)

AZ - You've been a big help in this mod. Thanks again!

Thanks, to both of you. I've been contemplating the PS or 1000s, and the issue of moving the clip-ons up and back has been the main sticking point. Now I know what is possible.
