Converting a SuperSport 1000DS to a Naked Sport Classic?
A friend of mine wrecked his 2005 SS1000DS (very happy that he escaped with just blue shoulders - his dainese gear and arai did their job) - while he is trying to find what the salvage value.. I am thinking about the possibilty of buying it and making it a project bike.
I am not looking for suggestions or project ideas - I know what I want - a proper 2up, air cooled DS1000 engined, naked, rational seating position, bike. I deal would be a cross between a sport1000(tank) and a GT1000(seat and side panels) - no chrome, 5 spoke marchesini wheels, with a mono shock and etc..
So few questions?
1. Are the SuperSport (2005) and SportClassic frames (reasonably) that same? ( I am not concerned about rear shock mounts as I prefer the SS mono and swingarm setup)
2. Can the a GT1000 seat be fiited along with Sport1000 Tank on the frame?
3. What needs to be done to make it a naked? just battery, wiring, & new headlamps?
4. Can a Monster S*R Single Side Swing arm be fitted?

I cannot answer all your questions, just throw in a few thoughts. I am doing a retro styled ST2. you might look over AirTech's web site. they have bunches of vintage glass parts including seats and 1/2 fairings. might be worth looking at for a few ideas. I am sure the frames are different as at least the shock placement is totally diff. print off a few photos and study them for a while.

Why not just check out one of the websites that has Ducati parts lists on it and see if the frames have the same or different part numbers?

I think the frames are quite different. I'm also sure that the forks and shocks on the SS were far superior to what is on the Sport 1000 (not so compared to the PS). The brakes are also better. You also obviously don't have the spoked wheels.
Depending on how "true" you want to be, it would seem fairly easy to convert the SS to a cafe racer, albeit it won't be the same as a SC, for the reasons stated above.
I'd simply add a DP rear seat cowl for the SS, which I'd guess would be similar to new Sport 1000 Biposto. Peel off the fairings. Leave the clip ons. Then all you'd be shopping for are bar end mirrors, headlight, and instrument cluster.

Function-wise that'd be true, but it'd take a good deal more to get the appearance issues solved.
One of the successes of the SportClassic series (which remains well hidden) is how much attention was paid - and the clever solutions found - to hiding the working parts needed on a modern mass production motorcycle. Big air boxes. Electrical this and thats. Tubes. Hoses. What nots. Old machines didn't have these things (God bless 'em!). The SCs do and so do the SSs.
You can view a Sport Classic in profile and not see them. Remove the fairing from an SS and you do. That's, quite frankly, half the function of the plastic -- to hide those unsightly parts.
My older SS has far less of that stuff than the newer model. But when I view her naked the first thing that comes to mind is "Darling, please put on your cloths or turn off the lights." Not so with the GT1000. What she elicits is "Why don't you finish that apple my Dear and come lie with me in the grass."

Good point about exposing all the hidden wiring, coils and other unsightly parts when you remove the SS fairings, but isn't that part of the fun - figuring out how to make it look like you want it to look?
I don't think anyone on this forum will have a "pat" answer to your questions on this project. You'll need to assemble the chosen parts and have at it.

1. Reasonably...yes. Both are tubular steel.
2. Yes, if you can weld and fabricate tabs onto the frame, which you can with a steel frame. Watch a chopper show, you can do anything with a steel frame.
3. Depends on your definition of naked. Some folks idea is much cleaner than others. Look at some "Streetfighter" websites for bolt on headlight ideas.
4. Depends again on your wrenching skills.
I like your ideas, and won't offer any project suggestions. But If I were you, I'd do a naked/streetfighter bike and not try to make it look like a classic. Post pics here whatever you do.
