importing a Sport 1000 S to Canada - is it possible?
hey guys,
I picked up a brand new Sport 1000 S in Germany where I currently live and work. I will be moving back home (Toronto, Canada) in the next year or 2. according to the Canadian laws, a car or bike has to be 15 years or older to be able to even let into the country. the only exception is when the car or bike is build to meet Canadian safety regulations.
BSF5048 : Importing a Vehicle Into Canada
my questions here is: aside from possibly the headlight, what safety parts or differences could be different on a Sport 1000 S for Europe vs one for Canada (or North America for that matter)?
I really would like to bring my Ducati back to Canada with me one day.
perhaps some of you have done this before or have some experience or suggestions?
thanks in advance

Looks like you might fall under this exemption for vehicles 15 years or newer:
"You are a resident of Canada who is returning to resume residence after an absence of at least one year, or you are a former resident of Canada who has been a resident of another country for at least a year. Refer also to the publication called Moving Back to Canada"

I'd be surprised if there is too much you'd have to change. I have never imported a bike from Europe, but brought my 2000 750SSie with me back from the US. You will have to go through the RIV (Registrar of Imported Vehicles). There is a user fee for that service (maybe $200? I don't remember exactly), and it is a multi-step process. First the RIV checks to see if the vehicle is eligible at all, and lets you know what changes might be required. Once you have made any required changes you get it inspected at a Canadian Tire shop, and they sign the paperwork. You will also have to pay import duties. When all that is done you can get a sticker and can get your registration.
In my case all I had to do was modify the speedometer to read in kph (since it was only in mph - kph wasn't even there in small font), but that won't apply to you, so I expect it will be simple.

I don't think that this below ecemption is the only one I have to meet. I think I need to meet the others too.
As for bringing a car/bike from US into Canada, it is not as complicated as from Europe

The document says as long as it was designed to meet Canadian or US vehicle standards, and you meet any of the exemptions, you should be good. Does the bike have any markings that it is good for over here? On mine there are 2 stickers on the frame under the seat and one on the bottom of the tank

Nope, only mentions the EPA and "Federal Standards" so probably a US-only thing. There is probably some Euro equivalent on yours though?
