Stoopid computer question...
How does one quote only a portion of a post when you are replying? I've tried highlighting the desired area and also editing the quote in the reply, but that seems to destroy the formatting...
It must be easy because more literate members do this all the time...
What's the trick?

Do you mean like this?
Delete what you don't want in your reply and just make sure that the "quote" HTML tags are still at the front and end of the quote.

Basically you just want to make sure whatever you write has the full [QUOTE][/QUOTE] around it. If the brackets or the backslash are removed, it'll bork the formatting
