749 forks?

friend came over with a 749.. forks looked to be a decent option for a swap for my 09 biposto... using my eyecrometer.
brake caliper mounting looked to be the same at least, length seemed close. are they a viable option for replacement? i did all sorts of searches and 1: im not interested in swapping wheels. 2: im not going to drop 2K + on fork internals.

As far as I know, they are larger in diameter.

Yes and no. Stock is 50mm & 54mm at top & bottom clamps respectively whereas the 749 is 53mm at both. The 749 forks are also longer.

748 Forks on my SC was one of the 1st improvements I made to its slovenly suspension. They are not a bolt in item. I did up triples to accomodate them.

Note pic of Brembo 36\32 caliper ...look closely at top mount bolt ...you can see the machine marks from the mill on the bolt and caliper ......this was necessary in order to centre caliper on SC wheel....

also upgraded 748 with Ohlins cartridges and springs.......as well as anodizing them black ....

The difference in handling and braking over the stock 'land yaught set up' defies description ! ..

If you wanna play you gotta pay

Stephano, all these goodies on your baby but I see you still ride with the stock rear suspension....

LA-Duc and I both switched to ohlins rear dual shocks and, after having done front suspension, wheels and brakes, that last mod made an incredible difference on the ride. Handling but also comfort. I highly recommend...

Or is that an old photo?

Another option !

M > This might be another way to go.....assuming the steering stem is the same or smaller diameter ...you could use 748 lower and forks as per ebay listing below ..all you would have to do is press the stem out of the SC lower and the 748 and install yours in the 748 lower....if anything would be a small amout of machine work to a) make the stem fit and b) get the right height to accomodate top triple ...if worse came to worse it would be easy to machine a new stem and not expensive. Adding tabs, bungs and or drilling and tapping a few holes to accomodate headlite bracket etc ...not a huge deal...the only thing left is spacing the calipers over the SC rotors..also a very simple and quick fix on the mill. I am betting you could do the whole thing for under 10 Ben Franklins ! Parts in these listings under $500 and pressing stems out and in not a biggie ....on secone thought bet it could be done under $800

Let me know how you make out ......

DGJ : Your recommendation is right on the money ! (literally )

Thanks but I got it ! The first thing I did was the 748 front end ....for the remainder of that season I just twisted up the stock rears springs ....pretty stiff....worked well ...see the write up at Dutch's blog for the long list of the rest which includes mono swingin arm and Penske shock photos attached ...

Stem on those bottom clamps are screw in versus our press fit. You can look for the base 748/749 bottom clamps which look similar to our SC clamps but have the correct sbk offset to match the top triple. The bonus is that the base bottom clamps usually have at least one if not both of the U bracket mounting holes drilled. With this setup you'll lose your steering lock though... if you care.

Blitz ....

Screw in ? Really ? Didnt know that...

hmmmmm...you could still do a bit of machine work to accomodate the SC stem...or simply machine one....pretty straight forward....as far as steering stops ..I incorporated them into the billet pieces we did from mine as didnt wanna ding the tank...you could also readily add them onto the 748 lower..
