Possable Battery problems???
I went for a short ride this morning and went to restart the bike (after 1/2 an hour sitting) the instruments went through their cycle as pre normal. but when i pressed the starter button the soliniod just clicked. the strater motor did not work... I got a friend to pick the bike and myself up and after getting the bike home i disconnected the big positive wire from the starter motor and put my multimeter lead onto the wire and the other lead onto the negitive of the battery.. I pressed the starter button and only got 12.00 volts DC. The battery is 12.4v off load (removed from the bike) Would i be right in assuming that the battery is fucked.
Any advice would be appreaciated
cheers

is your battery old?
it sounds really familiar to me since it was exactly happened to me when my battery died on my last year.
Battery should remain 12.8-13 when key's off
and when bike is on, should stays at 12.2 ish.
12v on OFF position is def low and may possibly be an dying battery.

does anyone know what the starter motor resistance is. I.e from the positive terminal on the starter to ground (bike frame) I get 1.3 ohms does this sound wright.

I've doubted my starter motor as you are now, but after consulted with a mechanic, what I learned was that the starter motor is one tough horse to kill. You'll have to completely take it apart to make it stop working. it's a japanese brand, makes quality stuff.
you should have 12.8 at normal condition. Your battery is not charging as it seems to me. it will just turning , turning and turning trying to catch that current but your battery amp is just not high enough. Try to charge it till 12.8 and if the battery can't hold 12.6 ( to say the least) it has some life issue.

Hi
The starter motor is not turning at all. I have prove that the power gets too the starter motor and that the soliod works, but the starter motor just sits there. I hope its just a buggered battery.
cheers

Sounds like the battery is shot but I'd bet it's the regulator/rectifier that's the cause of the troubles and a new battery will only temporarily get the bike running.

I wouldn't complain about a battery getting 6 years out of it , yeah some get more ,
check all the connections, clean them up , and keep an eye on things with thenew battery , go from there if all is ok ...

sounds like the battery... 5 years is good life out of one.
My bike is an 08 model... so I've just ordered 8 A123 cells to make up my own LiFe pack... figured I may as well do it now, before I get a dud battery problem.

Now you have a great opportunity to switch to a LiFePo battery and upgrade your reg/rec (location and unit).
That mod was one of the best I have ever done and has produced great peace of mind.
