S/M Oil Causing Engine Wear
Has anyone got any thoughts on synthetic oil which is rated at SAE SL/SM not providing adequate lubrication? Modern synths such as Shell Advance Ultra have greatly reduced levels of ZDDP (basically an additive containing zinc and phosphate) which has resulted in heavy wear of cams and rockers in classic engines. Now I know that our Ducatis are not classics (yet) but the cams and rockers are basically the same as Ducatis of old. The level of ZDDP was reduced in these oils to stop them contaminating the catalytic converter, so would we be better off using an oil with higher levels of ZDDP rated at SG or SJ?

I would say that modern oils are perfectly suited for our bikes…
As long as they have the correct specification…

Well, I've used just about every oil under the sun in the last 60,000 miles including semi-synthetic and blends of multiple brands, with no noticeable wear so my suggestion would be to not worry too much about it. Use Moto specific oil, change it every several thousand miles, and ride and ride...

I suggest that you use a motorcycle specific oil in air-cooled, wet-clutch engines. However, some folks run automotive oils and report good results. I tend to err on the side of caution and only run a full synthetic (group IV) oil with a rating of API SG, SH/CF, JASO MA.
