A quick safety question...sorry so long..

So I just purchased some heli bars from another forum member..2FLYRN. He gave me a nice deal, was cool bout the all the questions etc and the bars were in good shape.. Props to 2FLYRN

So when I went to put them on, I noticed that there was a spacer between the triple clamp and the old clamp that hold the stock bars. I have a 2000 900Supersport and wondered whether this was a stock piece?

Anywhoo, so I left the spacer on and put on the heli bars, and all the problems and benefits we have discussed were present, less turing lock, wierd clutch brake angle etc. But the bottom line is it felt like my old FJ1100 as far as bar comfort was concerned. it was awesome. But I like the feel of the stock bars for round town and on the occasional twisty ride.

Question, when the spacer is on there is a lip on the clamp on the heli bars like this;

I know the safety patrol will most likely get all over me for this. But I tightened the bars down and for the life of me they dont move a bit. I would love to keep the bars up this hight for my trip to GC, does this look like a safety issue to you guys? I cant flex them or move them at all.

I bought another set of grips, and this set up is only gonna be for rides longer than 2 days. Probably like twice a year. I am again gonna go for Grand Canyon in April (too hot last year).

I am not a wheelie guy anymore. My gut tells me they are fine. I tightened just the top bolt and still couldnt move the bare. Then with the bottom i just cant see this as an issue. Anyone think I am asking for it with this 1/3 inch lip? Every increment helps with comfort? Any impact where they would actually slip I fear i ould be off the bike anyway

Thanks for your input.

bar mounting

The main comment I have is that you should have the lower bolt in place. That part aside, if it were me, I would drop them until the centerline of the upper bolt is even with the fork top, that way you have the benefit of both bolts. This would use about half the spacer, have the other half machined off. My 2 cts...

you could push the fork through the clamps,
or have the stock cock rings taken out,
but please mount the clip-ons correctly,
as it looks insane.

do not tighten the screws on the clip-ons or
tripple clamps too much, as this will ovalize
your fork tubes.

cheers.

I think the alu. rings are spacers, you should be able to remove them and the Heli bars should fit correctly. Do not over tigthen the Heli bars as you can break one off the ears off.

The rings are just spacers, yes they are OEM, and no you don't need them. I removed mine so I could lower the bars.

The Helibars are designed to be used with the spacers removed. If they are used outside of the design parameters there can be no guarantee that they wont fail.
BTW thank you.

I could care less if it looks funky, I am looking at almost 2k miles, and comfort is more important than the look of the top of my shocks.

I have been riding it around for a few day like this. I am taking off the heli bars till the trip in April, and will decide then. My guess is I will just try to find another set of stock risers and grind em down a tad. Seems like I am giving up a lil bit by taking them off altogether. I just want as much lift as possible for the ride.

on a side note, I was talking to a few guys at Pennisnula Ducati bout it when I was ordering new grips and one guy told me I was crazy to do this. (Though I cannot believe there is a scenario when the bars would fail and I would not be ejected by the bike) Anywhoo I walked outside and he had a Monster with tires that were bald, and I mean NO TREAD

Go figure.

thanks for the suggestions guys.
