When should the oil line be centered in the glass??

So I completed my first Oil change on my new Supersport a few days ago, and I am unsure about the little glass oil gauge.

My question is, At what point should the oil level be centered? And here is what I mean.

When I changed the oil/filter I had the bike on a rear stand. I filled the oil till it was center in the glass, started the bike, IT sucked a bit of oil into the heads etc. so I shut it off, and added a bit more. I did this untill the oil level was near the upper hash mark on the glass when the bike was off, and would be right about center while the bike was running.

I left the bike on the center stand, and let it idle for about 5-10 minutes to warm up, and to make sure everything was ok. The entire time the oil level remained constant.

Now, the following morning I rode to work, when I got back home, I put the bike on the side stand, the oil level of course drained out of the glass because of the lean. I stood the bike up on the rear stand again, and the oil proceeded to fill the glass gauge completely.

I thought I was gonna have to drain out a bit of oil, but I started the bike just to make sure, and sure enough when it was running it evened itself back out.

So am I ok? Or do I have too much oil in it when I stand the bike up from the kickstand if it fills the oil gauge completely?

You want the oil to be in the lower half of the sight glass; that is with the bike upright (not on side-stand) and the engine off. Yes, you do have to run the engine for a bit, then top up after an oil change. Just wait for the oil to settle back in the sump to get an accurate reading. A little over the half-way mark will not hurt anything, but when you get to the top, or more, you will start spewing oil out the crankcase breather.

Hey Bella,

Thanks for your post.
The new oil level is 3 mm from the top of the sight glas - well above the center max line.. What do I do..

No; oil in the airbox. You can crack the drain screw and let some out.

You can get a length of plastic tubing, stick it down into the filler cap and suck out some oil to get the level where you want it.

oil level should be checked with engine off and level.
it should always be in between the full and min marks.
you should have no oil showing when the engine is running in the site glass, that would indicate that its to full.
you also shouldnt go by the first reading you see when you have just turned the motor off as the oil will still be running into the sump from the heads.
