SS touring

I just got back from a 4 day 1500 mile ride on my SS.
Down the Oregon and Northern California coast to San
Francisco then over to Sacramento to buy some gloves
and meet the people at MotoWheels, and then back to
the coast and home. I am very impressed with the
performance of my 900SS on this ride. It handled the
trip like a seasoned veteran, even the 30-50 knot
winds on the Southern Oregon coast. Granted I did
feel a little cramped on one very straight section of
freeway so I avoided it on the way home. One of the
things that struck me is how versatile this bike is. It
is a shame that such a great bike got lost in the
sales rat race. For me at least, the SS is a great
bike for 95% of all my riding.

4 days and 1500 miles made me fall in love with this
bike all over again.

Now if I just had those new…………

That's cool that you made the trip. I took my Supersport down to Miller Motorsports for the AMA races this summer. Just about the same distances as your trip, 800 miles down and then back. What an awesome time and the 900CR was great. The carby Ducs are a blast to ride and very versatile aren't they?

Regards,

Jeff

I'm jealous!

Nothing to compare with that around here.

These bikes are amazing. I took my bike on a 600 mile run up to Northern MN this summer and then went for another 50 mile ride when I returned home. No complaint and no problems. I love this bike.

I've done several cross-country trips on mine... I completely agree.
After I put a seargant seat on it (it had Helibars on it when I bought it) It was like riding a couch that will handle well in turns!

...but if it ever goes to the track it will have the stock seat on it -much better for moving around on the bike -just less comfy on extended trips.

CONGRATS on the great ride and safe return home!!!

Many more to you...

I did a similar trip on my 1999 900SS after I got divorced to clear my mind, WONDERFUL trip. The bike did great!

That's funny, I'm seeing more and more local people in oregon that own ducatis than i ever thought before!

Well I just posted about my 3300k, 10 day trip on my SS in a thread on luggage ... the early SS is perfect for it, I like what you say about losing the SS in the sales rat race, its headline figures aren't competitive yet the SS is so far from a bike about the 'numbers'. I guess we can refer back to the 'ss owners don't sell their bikes' thread and add another feather in the SS cap.

I can only speak with regard to the early SS but it does everything I ever needed or wanted my bike to do and thats why I only need one bike.

Over 25,000 miles on my 02 now...I LOVE touring on this thing. If I'm smart when I pack I can pack enough for well over a week of travel in my Nelson Riggs tail bag/saddle bags/tank bags.

2500 miles in arkansas twice over, another trip of 1500 miles, 1500 miles down in the hill country and now I'm getting ready to do about 3500 miles to tenn and back for a week...rather than trailer I prefer to ride to these places. In fact, I have a sticker on my bike:

And these shirts (because I'm a firm believer that you should ride there...):

I look at other bikes and while I can appreciate them, I cannot get excited enough to actually purchase beacuse I love my SS so much. It does everything I need and more than I could want. It's extremely reliable, gets great mileage, still allows me to unload all my luggage and ride hard then load up the luggage and tour.

I LOVE this thing!

The same is true of the post-99 models, but we have to spend 4 or 5 hundred dollars first to reverse all the "improvements" Ducati made!

I want this to be a very positive thread!
But I am not the always the kind and lovable guy you folks KNOW me to be!
The very first place I stoped on the way home was a very good friend's business that happens to love HD.
I asked, in jest, if he had trailered his bike that far this year, and he admitted that he had not.
Buyers are buyers and riders are riders. SS people tend to be riders. IMHO.
(that includes you CriterDoc )
