Clutch Hub Question '93 900ss
New to this forum, but I used to be on Ducati Index
1993 Ducati 900ss with 30,000 miles, no engine mods besides jet kit, pipes, etc
I have a barnett clutch (friction/steel plates & springs) in my bike now with around 15,000 miles on the clutch itself. A couple of months ago I noticed part of the raised material on one of the friction discs had cracked/worn off. Clutch seemed to work fine. see pic
Yesterday during a ride, when I went to restart bike and put it 1st gear it creaped forward then died. I had to really rev it up and then select 1st gear to get going without it stalling. (As if the clutch needed to be adjusted).
Do you think this could be related to teh friction disc missing some material or has to do with the stock clutch hub ? The groves in some of hub arms are larger than other arms.see picture.
I know there is a tolerance from plates to hub to check, but wanted your guys opinion on the wear here. WIll it hurt to just replace clutch plates and leave hub as it is ?
Once I was riding again and got home it seemed to be fine in 1st gear. Maybe something to do with it building up heat when I turned off the engine.

The hub is the part in the center. The outer piece [with all the ridges worn into it] is the basket, and yours has reached the end of it's usable life.
I would get a new basket. Aluminum or steel, it's your choice. Either way I'd get a fresh clutch pack with aluminum friction plates. It will be easier on either basket, and will make less noise.
I don't know what's available where you are, but if you go with a stock clutch pack, get one for an ST4 [they are aluminum]
btw, I like your avitar

Thanks for the advice Blade. I've been looking on the net as I figured the basket is about done for. Barnett sells an aluminum basket with steel inserts so you run either aluminum or steel plates. Problem is that the website shows its only available for 900ss 95-02. I wonder if it would work on my 93.
anyway thanks for the help !

Just last weekend I replaced my clutch basket (Paulimoto) and clutch pack (Barnett aluminum) with a 'Charlie's ProCutting' basket (hard ano) and a new Barnett aluminum clutch pack.
Holy Quiet Clutch Batman. This has to be the best basket on the market, but it certainly isn't the cheapest. There is a German company called MPL Tuning Parts selling what looks like a very nice basket via eBay right now. I think some members here have installed an MPL basket with good results.
Your clutch hub looks o.k. to me but the clutch plates are toast.

A - Mad Max fan?
A dry clutch is a dry clutch - I think they are pretty much the same through the years - but I may be wrong.
Cheapest fix is to just replace the clutch pack. The basket looks about the same as mine was or a little better but the tangs on my friction plates were about twice as bad - no missing material though. I went expensive - Nichols basket, VeeTwo hub, Barnett clutch pack and Yoyodyne slave. Also bought a bling pressure plate, stainless springs and bolts then covered it all up with a carbon cover - about 1000 Aussie dollars. And holy quiet clutch Batman it still is. I think. Has about 5000klms on it and naughty me still hasn't checked it. Old clutch was that loud you couldn't take the cover off with the bike idling. Once mobile it wasn't so bad.
Just check a few websites before spending the cash. I got most of my stuff from http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/shop/ca...ti/engine.html and VeeTwo Australia. A few will also recommend http://www.desmotimes.com/

He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a pebble and rolling an ankle.
