High pipes heat shield?

I have a new (to me) 90's style 900SS. A 98 Fe to be precise. Its got high pipes. When I bought her I recognized the black splotch on the pipes as melted boot heel. I could not tell what kind of boot.

Now, about fifty clicks later, the splotches include Sidi heel rubber. Both sides.

Anyway, my feet arent particularly big, and I'm not particularly clumsy, so I'm guessing this is an old problem.

So what to do? Any recommendations on a carbon fibre (er) guard? Can I epoxy a fitting on to the pipe to mount it? Can I weld a fitting on without compromising the integrety of the pipe? What do most of you with high pipes do?
