Engine rebuild cost?

Hello all
Does anyone have experience with how uch an engine rebuild could cost. I have contacted several dealers and I canot get a straight anwer from any of them.
Engine is currently on the bike, and that is the way they want it. I am just trying to establish an estimate, I cant even get them to give me a worse case scenario!
Any help would be appreciated.

I suppose the answer is, "it depends". Why are you rebuilding it? You could just need new rings and bearings, which would be relatively cheap. Or you could need new pistons and rods, a machined crank and machined barrels... which I'm sure is going to be expensive.

I don't know any dealers where you live, but I'd almost be tempted to contact one of the bigger ones (e.g. BCM, Seattle, MBP) and see if you can freight your motor to them & have them do it.

If you are just going to to do work on the top end, ie heads/cylinders/pistons/rings it shouldn't be bad, labor-wise [I can't quote you a number, as I do it all myself] Unless you are building it to go racing, then the head work can get a little expensive.

Internal work, mains bearings, con rods, tranny work [including output sahft bearing] etc. requires splitting the cases and is far more involved.

Why does it need to be rebuilt? Is it seized? Bearing knock? Blowing smoke?

In any case, I would think they would prefer it already out of the frame...unless they just want to make the extra money to pull it themselves.
