(Oh FFS what now??) Belt pulley shaft seal leaking.... :o(
Noticed oil running out from behind my belt covers (900SS carby, 1995), just changed the top pulley seal - real easy as it had a spacer tube in it allowing you to pull the seal out from behind.
This one will be more challenging.... no obvious way of pooting it out from behind, can't pull the pulley shaft out from the other side of the cases either??
Fek.
Has anybody got a spare seal so I can see the backside of it to establish how its made, rubber/metal etc please?
There is the time-honoured way of drilling a small hole, screwing in a self-tapper and pulling it out that way, I am shy to do this for sprinkling any clag into the engine?
Anybody?

Hi,
to get the shaft out you will need to split the cases... There is a bearing behind the seal and the seal is similar to the other seal you replaced. You could use a sharp hook to pull it out... or use a small flat head screw driver to wege it out...

Indeed! With the bearing behind it any fluff shouldnt fall straight into the cases? Will have to see if I can hook it out - have to get a new seal first?
The old top pulley seal had cooked itself to a plastic state, no wonder it leaked...
Am I right in thinking it is p/n: 93785.1830 for this seal?

Passing thought...
If I was to scorch said seal with a blowtorch, the rubber would soften & it would prove easier to remove? I cant see it getting any hotter than when the engine was up to temp? There would of course be no strict concentration of flame...

Personally, I wouldn't heat it up. You maybe overthinking this. Put the hook in and pull the bugger out.

Probably am, yes... the top seal poiked straight out? Will have another look tomorrow... seal size is 30mm OD/18MM ID/7mm depth, will have drive down the local bike shop tomorrow, they carry a fair selection of bearings & seals? Just worried about possible hook breakage etc.

Then double up on the hooks. One on either side.
