tachometer swapability?

I'm finally getting around to replacing my cracked and weathered tachometer on my 2000 750ss. While searching ebay for a replacement I came accross a lot of superbike tachometers. Are the tachometers from the 748 and 916 from the same years interchangable? I know they look the same appearance wise, but I am unsure if the wiring and connections on the back of the gauges would be compatible.

Thanks in advance for any input!

I think the wiring would be similar but the rev range would be quite different for one thing.
I seem to remember a discussion about 916/748 tachos being used on SS/monsters for a race series in the UK concluding that it couldn't (or shouldn't) be done!

Quoting the Ian Falloon book I have ....

"While the early prototypes used the long serving white faced Veglia instruments, production models were fitted with 916 instruments with new graphics."

just looking at my tacho it has a black background, white lettering from 0 to 1100 rpm and the oil light on the right hand side.

Dunno why you might need to know about the tacho, but if yours is stuffed, maybe you can get it serviced or possibly there is a bad connection to it.

Ooops

Just read you post again.

If it is just the cover you can probably fabricate a new cover with Lexan/acrylic.

You wrote yours is cracked, but for others, if it is just scratched, you can use toothpaste as a really mild polishing agent combined with a bit of water and a soft cloth.

yes the 748 916 etc fit and run correctly in the supersport models, they use the same tacho's i ran a 916 rev counter in my 2002 powered 900ss.

Thanks for the input punch and catilover!

If it wasn't for the crack I'd try and buff it out but now I'm gonna try and source a 748/916 tach if I can find one for cheap. They seem to be more readily available compared to the ss models.

I did a quick search on repair kits, just to see if they are available.
This link is just to show repair kits (in general) are available, but you would need to search for whatever brand is used on the SS. I can't see the back of mine as it is in the plastic housing.
Veglia 80mm Tachometer Bezel Repair Kit Ducati Moto Guzzi - $13.99 : Eurotrash Jambalaya, Vintage European Motorcycle Parts

There is also a 2000 tacho on eBay in New York for US$ 135

This is the item number 350521015791

BTW, this is the Duc P/N for the tacho 402.4.008.1A
Looks like this is for 2001 and 2002 from searching that P/N on Google
Might help in searching/identifying the right one.

New price is circa US$420 !!!!!!!

yeah i managed to get my 748/916 tacho threw a dealer too, and really cheap!! they do not have red lines on the gauges tho so unless you cant hear your limiter then they are not really needed anyway haha i now do not run a tacho at all on my bike!! i know when its close to red line just from the engine rpm noise
