Brakes/Forks and choke!

Well I picked up my 600SS today and I'm really pleased with it,

A couple of questions though....

I'd like to put twin discs on the front, So I need to get a RH fork slider with caliper mountings, I presume 750 and 900 ss will be the same and I can refit my current internals and springs. Do I have to use the pre 98 forks, or are the later ones the same as well? There seems to be more of the "facelift" ones on ebay.

On a different subject, the choke on the bike seems quite erratic. The bike wont start until you give it plenty of choke and then it shoots upto 4Krpm which makes me cringe on a cold engine. So I blipped the engine gently on the choke lever. Is this a normal thing or is it a sign on poor adjusted carbs?

You need to do some research into SS forks.....There are fully adjustable Showas on the early 900s, and two versions of non-adjustable Marzocchis on the early to '98(approx) 750s and 600s.
Trouble is there are also non-adjustable Showas on some models which as far as I am aware were on 900s,750s and 600s.

At a guess, I reckon you will have non-adjustable Marzocchis....You can tell by the top nut dimension, large (about 30mm) and fairly 'flat' and rings at 4mm centres around the tops of the fork legs.

If so, you should be able to find these fairly easily and cheaply (because they usually get swapped in favour of the fully adjustable Showas which have slotted adjusters top and bottom).....

It might even pay you buy a pair of Marzocchis....and as a point, they are easier to repair seals and service than the Showas.

The main thing to watch for is the caliper mounting lug bolt hole centres......although I don't think the Marzocchis ever varied, obviously they should be the same as your existing caliper.

AL.

Mr Spigot is bang on the money regarding the answer to the forks....he seemed to forget to answer the choke question...in fact its not a choke, but a fast idle, maybe have a look to see if the bar that slides in and out on the carbs when you apply the idle is not sticking, as you should be able regulate the idle.
