Negative Battery Cable
Just a quick regarding the battery -
I removed the battery cables about a month ago just to do some tidying up under the tank, and for the life of me, I can't figure out where the negative cable attaches to the frame! The only boss on the frame that I see is where the CR fairing bracket goes on the half fairing models. (mine is a 97 900SP). I checked the parts fiche but it doesn't show the actual grounding point.
Anyone know off hand where it bolts to?
Thanks in advance everybody!
-Max

That's where it's attached on mine

Ditto on my '94. Just in front of the battery, on the inside of the frame. There should be another negative lead there that runs up to the wiring harness in the front.

Ah great. Thanks a bunch for the help. I don't see that negative pigtail for the front wiring harness on mine - but everything is working.
Thanks again!

On my '97 and '98 the wire connects to the frame at the left, rear airbox mounting point.

Run another big-core ground lead straight from your battery to the engine ground point, by the righthand footrest - for MUCH better cranking!

Add a Powerlet rewire kit for the positive side too, and you can virtually ride it on just the power from the starter

At the risk of opening a can of worms here ( I know everyone has preferences for their own wiring to improve cranking on these bikes).. can I ask specifically how you have the negative system wired? Mine is - I think - stock, as I have a cable from the battery anode to the frame, then a small negative jumper from the frame to the engine block at that point you mentioned above, near the right footpeg.
Are you saying that you run a thick gauge wire directly from the battery anode to the engine block?

Yes.
Go to a car parts stockist and buy a 60cm battery earth lead with flat terminals and bolt it in place. I left the originals in place too.

What he said.
Make sure all connectors are clean, degreased etc before fitting - have just added a fat lead straight from the battery positive terminal to the solenoid, also leaving the originals in place? The standard positive lead goes into a splitter block, one lead goes to the solenoid - the spade type connector in this connector cannot be anything but a point of high electrical resistance... now spins over like an IL4.
