Petrol tank still leaking from cap!

Just a follow up to my last thread regarding leaking fuel from the cap, tried very recommendation but still get streaks of fuel over the tank, seems to be coming direct from the cap (yes its closed correctly) rubber seal seems ok, cant actually work out how to replace that anyway?

Any other suggestions will be really welcome :-(

Its not a huge issue, just a pain to have to clean the tank after every ride lol

This one?
Seal Broken on Petrol Cap? Ducati 1000ss

There is a green o-ring inbetween the fuel cap body and the tank itself, if this has been dislodged / broken / is missing altogether / stolen by monkeys then yes - your fuel tank contents will be in your lap.
Its easy enough to replace, the hard part is getting the cap body out of the tank in the first place??

Yeah that's the original thread, its not a huge amount of fuel we're talking about, just streaks coming from the cap towards the front end after a strong riding season, just bloody annoying!

Cool! Remove the M6 allen bolts at the 12, 4 and 7 o'clock positions holding the main cap in place (instructions are for a 900SS, I'm unfamiliar with the 1000SS tank but can only assume it's similar??) ), the other bolts are for decoration only...

Loosen all 2mm allen grubscrews by about 3mm - the other ends are pointed and locate in a recess inside the tank neck, no need to completely remove them...

Now the tricky part. Wrap the tank in clean rags to prevent any possible scratching etc and hold it between your feet/ankles. Pushing the tank down with one hand pull the cap assembly out of the tank with two fingers of your other hand. It will NOT come out easily, so be prepared for a fight/swearing/confusion/doubt-in-your-mind...

Once it is out check the condition of the top black seal and the thin green o-ring seal? If the green ring is broken etc get a new one in there and lightly lube the neck of the tank & the o-ring itself with engine oil/grease before CAREFULLY pushing the cap assembly back in... be sure not to displace the green ring so it comes out of its groove and gets pushed to the top, much leakage will ensue.

Are you over filling it?

the manual states it should be filled no higher than 50mm from the bottom of the aluminium casting.

I filled mine to this level, and no leaks. I believe it was coming out through the lock if filled higher

But last time i did that, after a hard ride, i noticed there was gas right under the cap? kinda splashing about i guess? pipes seem ok under tank btw

Cheers :-)

Reading this topic, I seem to be getting a strong smell of fuel from the cap now when the bike is resting, no apparent leak. Is it the same problem with the rubber seal?
